View Full Version : Lightweight flywheel? Yes, no?

I've been told quite a few things about this, so first let me just tell the specs of my car stock, in case that helps with the choice:

It weighs ~2500lbs, it's a FWD four cynlinder with 115 hp stock.

So anyway, should I just replace the clutch and be done with it, or should I throw a lightweight flywheel in there that comes in at around 8.5lbs (versus ~13-14 stock)?

Some people say it's a great mod that'll liven up response a bit, and I may as well do it while I'm pulling things apart, but others have told me that it affects daily driving negatively, puts excessive wear on the new clutch, and only really improves downshift time a little bit.

So, lemme know what you guys think

The only drawback I ever had with any of mine is that the car is more likely to stall with the AC on and if you accidentally bog it a bit from a stop. Otherwise the benefits are much greater for an NA car.

Hm.. more likely to, or "stalls a lot" with AC on?

In Florida AC will probably be on for the next 9 months of driving.

Never ran mine with AC, but I don't have anything bad to say about mine. I like it and would do it to the next car that I want to modify.

A lighter flywheel retains less energy/intertia, so you will pay for it if/when you try to launch the car. The upside is less rotating mass so it spins up faster. There may also be some input shaft noise.

I went from a 34 lb dual mass flywheel to an 18 lb aluminum stainless steel insert single mass part in my supra. The input shaft noise, which was eliminated by the dual mass of the stock part, was awful. With the A/C on at idle it sounded like a diesel. And it hurt my ability to launch the car (never got under a 1.95 after the swap). But, it revved like a chainsaw and hit the rev limiter pretty quick.

I also set my idle about 200 rpm higher, which helped with the car stalling when I'd get off the throttle.

If you are a serious drag racer, there are pros and cons to weigh. If it's a daily driver, why bother? IMNSHO, of course.

Cool. This is why I was curious: http://store.blackforestindustries.com/euliflandclk.html

Uses the stock Sachs clutch, and I figure since the kits are around $150 anyway, it's not a bad deal.. though I honestly don't know the benifits of getting a lightened wheel versus just waiting to get an aluminum one.

For now it's a daily driver, but once I move home and get set up there, it won't be. I plan on trying to get into the track events and rallycross crap there. As far as launching, I'm not into drag racing a 115hp car :p

I've loved both mine (one in a crx, the other in a 240sx). I've noticed it's a little harder to launch my 240, but it revs quick. In my crx (probably more similar to what you have being ff and feather light at 1800 lbs) I never had anything negative to say about it. I guess a light car really doesn't need that much inertia to get it going.

i had a lightweight, nice for an NA car but after boost it seemed

harder to hold boost thrw shifting

I've had two NA cars now with lightweights. Made a big change in throttle responce for the better... Launching the car is a biit tricker at first, but once you get used to it, its no big deal... I've run A/C in mine too and thhere was no problem there, you just have to rev it a touch more to make sure it goes... plus the thing is zippy as hell.

Thanks for the fabulous input, 49 posts. This kind of question is, since you bring up the stock HP number, one of whether it was worth spending the money, which it was not

I enjoy my flywheel in every aspect. I got so used to mine, I keep thinking it's stock..
