View Full Version : Stupid Question about Turbo Lag

Okay, so my 2005 WRX has this odd sound when I get above about 5,000 RPM's. I know what turbo lag feels like, but sometimes I can hear a click with the lag. Anyone know what this is? Bad or normal? The car only has 22K miles on it and I baby it pretty good.
Yea, call me a noob if its just the turbo lag, but still new to this boost thing.

You wouldn't have turbo lag at that high of an RPM unless for some reason you put a massive turbo on it. If the turbo is stock, then it is something else.

What is this click you are talking about, and is there any hesitation feeling in your car's acceleration at this RPM?
I've no idea what you are talking about, but if I were you I'd get to my dealer ASAP. At 22k miles you are still under the 3 yr / 36k mile warranty.
Turbo lag is the delay between when you put the throttle down and when the turbo has enough exhaust flowing through the turbine housing to make boost. There's no lag once boost is being made, unless you've got a boost leak.

The stock turbo is so small on those cars, that there really shouldnt be any "lag". Should be pretty instantaneous unless you have a boost leak like John said.

Well the problem is I have a BOV and that pretty much will void a warranty at a dealership. LeoZ put it on for me and I would like to take it off before I take the car in...

Maybe your wires plugs or other ignition pieces need replacing I have almost the same problem on my 93 civic boosted hatch, right around 5k (vtec for me it kinda seems if it is going in and out of boost, I replaced my cap and rotor no luck might do the wires and new plugs or at least tighten the gap next week.
Is it recirculating or venting to atmos? If you are venting to atmos, I'm done with this thread. If not...
Put the stock valve back on the car. No need for an aftermarket valve unless you are a ricer, or you are pushing 300+ whp.

Its apparent that I needed some suggestions but if you are going to going to say you are "done" with this thread thats fine. Thanks for your wonderful help just hope you remember there was a time when you didn't know everything.

huh
I asked if you could put the stock valve back on. I also asked if you were venting to atmosphere or not. If so, you are going down the wrong road (noise/rice vs performance). Thus my "I'm done with this thread" comment.
Read this link (http://jsalmi.com/bov/) for some quick & dirty info on BOVs, and why venting a 'closed' system (as all modern turbocharged motors are) to atmosphere via a BOV isn't the best idea.
Know everything? Not by a long shot. I know a little teeny weeny bit about turbocharged motors, learned 100% by trial & error.
Bottom line: put the stock valve back on the car (as well as any other aftermarket under-hood parts) and take it to your dealer for warranty work. Or at least an evaluation of what's going on.
