View Full Version : Some good info on Wolf ammo in an AR-15

Most people know that Wolf ammo got a bad rep years ago because the laquered finish and primer sealant would end up all over the chamber, but this was supposedly fixed when they changed to the polymer style that you see today. Well, The Box O' Truth did some tests and got some interesting and useful results... http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/edu18.htm
What's happening here is that the steel Wolf cases aren't expanding enough to form a good seal when fired, so some of the (dirty, carbon-filled) gasses are getting between the case and the chamber, causing a build up of carbon in the chamber that is far in excess of normal. Then, firing a brass case that DOES expand fully will result in that case being "glued" into the chamber by the carbon buildup.
It actually looks to me like the SA brass is BRITTLE, not too soft. Soft brass will be deformed at the case rim where the extractor pulled through it, while hard, brittle brass will just have that section of the rim broken off.
Likely, neither ammo would be a problem on its own, but mixing them is clearly bad news.
So, you can fire Wolf all day long, but just need to clean your rifle before switching back to brass. In a bind, you can fire some good quality brass (ie not brittle) to clean some of that crap out, but be prepared for issues with the first few rounds.

yup . . steel and brass together are no no 's . They wouldnt let me shoot my wolf ammo at one range because it was steel . . Over time it will wear the barrel . .

Most ranges that ban Wolf just do it because they collect the brass shells for reloading, and you can't reload Wolf's steel. Wolf also now has a "gold" line, which uses brass. I don't know what the pricing is like though.

I've only shot 20 rounds of Wolf in mine, but it had no problem with it. I want to buy a lot of it, but Sportsmans Warehouse in Loveland is the only place I've seen that carries it. I went to the Thornton store to get some, but they didn't have any. Maybe I'll just order online...

i had a problem with wolf only after shooting like 800 rounds through it consecutively. the casing would get too hot and stay stuck in the chamber

I couldn't ever get a full magazine of Wolf to go through my AR. Always jam-o-matic.
There was definately laquer coming off in the chamber. But this was also probably 7 or 8 years ago. YMMV.

How's it going to wear the barrel? The bullets aren't steel, just the cases. It's still copper jacketed lead bullets.

none of my guns like wolf, shot through a springfield 1911 mil-spec, ar-15, USP, and ruger 345, never made it through a mag. The guy at the range i go to told me that the reason they don't allow wolf is just because when they recycle the empties, they don't get paid on the entire batch if a single steel casing is found.

Yeah, 20 cents a round is a bit pricey for 9mm FMJ, especially Wolf. You can get Winchester FMJ's for 17 cents or less.
