View Full Version : CO Supreme Court ruling on Denver Gun Laws today

My buddy works for a firm that handles a large gun lobby group. The had their hearing today in the CO Supreme court over a suit filed by the city of Denver against the State of CO regarding SB 24 and SB 25 which made gun laws uniform statewide.
These allowed Denver residents the same rights as the rest of CO.

From the ruling memo I recieved just now:

"Wade:
The Supreme Court decision was released today. Basically, they upheld two lower court decisions allowing for Denver's overly restrictive gun laws. The Court was split, but Denver residents are basically still screwed."

That's BS.

Wow, that sucks, but it's not surprising either... Once again, the right to keep and bear arms has been infringed.

Denver has restrictive gun laws, including an assault weapons ban, and just like the federal one that expired in 2004, it's silly and only serves to ruin things for law abiding citizens. Apparently, the state legislature is wanting to standardize gun laws across the state even more (they have already done so for people who carry firearms in their cars), and Denver sued the state to stop this attempt.

O shitty. I'm glad I don't live in Denver. Castle Rock will probably remain a gun-toting hick town for a while. w00t!

I still don't understand what this does. So basically I can have an assult riffle since I don't live in Denver, but someone who DOES live in Denver can't have one?

Exactly. However, you can drive through Denver with one in your car, because state law protects you there (rifles and shotguns can't be loaded while in a car though; only handguns can be loaded).

i heard that 10+ round mags are still banned in denver.

Probably... most assault weapons bans restrict the ammo capacity to 10 rounds. Of course, if you've owned an AR-15 for more than a day, you know how to swap mags fast enough that you don't have any down time, so it's just a pointless inconvenience more than anything. It's not like the criminals obey the law anyway, so it doesn't change anything for the better.

That law doesn't bother me because Denver is where lots of people come together to hang out. It's kind of like not being able to have a gun in a bar, that's okay with me.

I don't know about any restrictions on guns in bars. That's one place I'd want to have one. Especially in Denver. I'd guess more senseless violence happens to people minding their own business in Denver on a Friday or Saturday night than anywhere else.

Denver's ban only hurts law abiding citizens. Someone intending to commit a crime probably isn't thinking about what kind of gun they can and can't have. I would estimate that the overwhelming majority of gun crimes in Denver are committed with handguns that don't violate the ban.

So if a person lives in Denver they don't have the same rights as the rest of the state? You don't see a problem with that?

I think it's over 20 rounds... But they include the camber capacity IIRC. So a 20 round mag is considered 21 because you could have one in the camber and a full magazine in the weapon. :fu:

Its worse for people who own bull terriers. They cant even transport them through denver (aurora now as well), let alone own one (or anything that looks like one).

Just take a look at how that works and the future of any rights you think you might have goes out the window - with just about every other amendment. If someone can label you a terrorist while their at it, you dont even get a trial - go directly to camp x-ray, do not collect 200$.

"A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government."

No no, there certainly IS a problem with that, I just personally don't have a problem with it because I don't live in Denver and don't own a gun.

with a CCW you can't carry in bars (which is fine for me too) but like Weston said, BG's don't obey the law so they might be armed.

Quick question. Everyone keeps talking about this license that you can get for a full auto weapon, but I'd like to know their sources on this because it seems like herseay to me. Anyone have a REAL source that says this license exists?

yeah but it's not illegal to have a loaded firearm in your possession when you are in a bar... just don't drink... alcohol and guns do not mix...
