what does everyone think a good swap for the 91 gti is? I have heard a lot of things: 1. vr6, the problem I have with this is how many things have to be done to make this work correctly ie: the suspension to accomadate the extra weight so the car will retain its decent handling, change to five lug.(mine is four) which would mean new wheels. have to get a custom exhaust. and the motor would add 250 pounds to my svelt 2300 lb car! I would love to swap in a 1.8t but have never even heard of anyone doing this and dony even know what all it would enatil. I think the cost of that would be outrageous also. The other thing I have heard but am not sure how great it is would be to swap
in a 2.0 block from an a3 with my head ported and polished. that would run me about 1100 bucks with a decent cam and cam gear and head gasket belt tensioner etc. The only thing is I am not sure if this would even make enough power to get me into the 16's without nos. Well I would appreciate anyones feedback. Cause if I dont figure it out I'm just gonna save for a couple months and but an fd3s rx7.

adrenaline motorsports has done some 1.8t swaps. I think you need to get an audi 1.8t engine, you will have to get a custom intercooler and maybe intake,i think. The wiring looks like the biggest pita in the install. heres a link to their swap (http://www.adrenalinmotorsport.com/)

There are many different options you have. I have a 91 VR6 GTI and for the longest time it was running 4-lug suspension. You dont't have to change that if you don't want to. You will need a corrado VR6 front subframe, a VR6 motor/tranie/wiring harness, and the shifter box and cluster to do the swap correctly. You can order a exhaust through any vw shop. I have been going to RS Motorsports for about 5 years and there selling complete do it yourselfe conversions for $3500. There number is 303-432-8989. Please IM me with any questions. Good Luck Dave

Cool I will give them a call, what do you think of swapping in an a3 2.0 and maybe some nos?

The 2.0L crossflow motor handles NOS quite well it's a good motor to swap. There are some clearance issues with the throttle body under the hood but other than that it's a good swap. The guys at RS Motors have about 14 2.0L crossflow motors so there not going to run out. In about a year or two were going to build a all out drag A2 gti with a crossflow turbo motor and boost the piss out of it. PM me if you have any more questions, Dave
