At 7:08 PM EDT on May 5, 2002, Matt Scranton piloted the Turbonetics "Drag Barrier Celica" through the Old Bridge Township Raceway Park quarter mile traps and into the record books with a 7.159@202.55 MPH run. The pass marks the first time anybody has seen the north side of the 200 MPH barrier in an import powered vehicle. The monumental moment came in the Pro V8 Final, the last Pro run of the day, against veteran sport compact racer Craig Paisley's Toyota Tundra. After leaving the starting line a tick after the Paisley Automotive truck (.702 to .467 reaction time), the twin-turbo V8 Celica chased down Paisley en route to a second consecutive NHRA Sport Compact win and the MPH record to a standing ovation from the filled grandstands.

Cool!

I knew 200mph would be surpassed this year but I thought that one V6 focus was gonna be the first.

Go TOYOTA!!

Ditto, they did exactly what all the Pro Stock guys have been doing for the past 25 years, but they used an "import" V8 BFD

Now, when they push a 4 banger to that limit WOW

It is cool to see an import powered car go 200+, but like I said in that other post they haven't done anything that the pro-stock NHRA guys have been doing for years. Glad to see someone actually did it though. And most 4 cyl would be really hard pressed to break 200 at this point anyhow.

I was very impressed, before I read V8 powered. Still cool though, can't wait to see a 4 or even 6 banger do it.

Even if it's still a V8 it's good for the import scene in general,at least it showing that import made engines are up to the task and it's only gonna get faster. Even domestic V8s had time to grow and get faster.

Extreme Motorsports (Sean Glazar - 8.78 DSM) will be debuting a tube chassis Mirage with a 4G63 (2 liter DSM motor) turned to the rear and is converted to run a rwd setup. They say the thing is could run 6s.

See it here http://www.extrememotorsports.com/team/seangu.htm

Maybe we will see the first 4 banger import powered car in the 6s. That would be impressive.

I read that there is a vw drag bug in florida that runs 6's and it is well over 200 mph. Yes it is a four cylinder and yes it is a import! Many people dont consider bugs imports though...Most people think of jap. made cars as imports.
