View Full Version : Opening my damn car door...

This is a bit of a Catch 22 situation. The door lock / release mechanism on my AllTrac's passenger side door is busted - apparently from a slim jim. I can't take the door panel off without opening the door, but I can't open the door without taking the panel off. The lock is apparently unlocked, tugging on the door handles *does* do something to the mechanism at the back of the door, but it won't open.

The outer handle 'feels' like it's locked, and the inside door handle 'feels' like it's unlocked. A key in the door handle won't turn either direction, and the lock tab on the inside of the car is jammed in the open position.

I'll destroy the door panel if I absolutely have to, but removal of the driver's side doesn't seem to reveal much. Most of the door is metal, and there's not any holes in it where I could reach in to feel what the release rods are doing.

I've called an automotive locksmith who had absolutely no idea what to do.

I'm at a point now where I NEED this door to be open so that I can remove the dash and begin running wires. I need help... either a recommendation to a GOOD locksmith, or maybe someone who knows what they're doing.

Sounds like its time for the HAI gun club..... eerrr... that sucks chris. But I would tear apart the panel... probably easier to replace then the inards of your door.

I'm not fixing it, I'm building it. Big difference, and when it's done I'd be happy to destroy you. ;)

I'll stick to a car that's not a theft target. Thanks though.

That's what I ended up doing - but out of frustration instead of reason/logic. I'll post pics later. :D

Get a garage and only take it to places where you'll be no more than 5 feet away from it at all times. Problem solved! :D

Hey. My doors has issues too. What I had to do was unscrew the handel, push it as far fowards and then screw it back in. It works for about 2 weeks then I need to repeat the proscess. Tough luck man. Go to a Junk yard. The panel should be cheap.

Um... you must be fairly unaware as to how rare AllTrac System10 door panels are.

Did you start "building" it before or after you broke it?

Does it matter? If I wasn't building it I could have had it fixed the month after it broke. And I don't see why you say "building" in quotes, as if I'm lying about it or something.

Price isn't an issue. The availability of the panel itself scares me a bit... I'll have to get one from a wrecked GT4, or have one shipped here from the UK. :(

"Building it" is when you take a working car apart for the purpose of upgrading it.

"Fixing it" is when you blew your motor and are replacing it.
