Well..... if you wanted to do a semi-budget boost project on a Honda SOHC non-vtec motor... which would you go with.

Daily driver compatibility too. Want something that will provide reliability!

Also looking for something that's easy for learning how to tune! Via watching somebody who's qualified do the actual tune of course!

Thoughts?

TIA.

my thoughts are NEPTUNE how much is uberdata gonna cost you? do you already have a chipped ecu for it?

but if you want to tune it yourself this might not work out for you,

VAFC is a hack it's a fake out pretty much to the ecu
bad idea, uber has alot of bugs from what i've heard also
but it's still a controllable system.

and if you get a good tune your not gonna want to mess with it

if its a SOHC non vtec and you dont care about it, just go with a AFC. they work fine.

talk to Servion on here he can point you in the right direction or heres the link to his site www.serviontuning.com

Chipped ECU = $100 and works well.
VAFC = $250 and gets you by.

You do the math.

Your best and most reliable bet is to go with a good FM like Neptune. Just talk to Jeremy(Servion) on here or his site.

talking from experience...just tune with uberdata crome or actually spend some cash. I spent the money on a safc...first off I didnt feel safe doing any heavy driving and secondly it was stolen. if you have it anywhere in sight if they come in to take your cd player, they're taking the safc. uberdata/crome is freeware. if you can just find someone local willing to tune for a very nominal fee you'll end up saving money over buying the s/vafc new, and you'll have a much better tune.

There are alot of tunners out there some of the numbers I have seen on cars from Jeremy, Pang, and Toby are the best around here. Pm them and ask what they recomend

The VAFC setup is great to get the car running with boost, and it can be perfectly reliable too, if done right... But you'll get a wider power-band and a little more power with something fully tunable like Uberdata, and it has some neat features too. You'll have to invest more time and effort to fully tune Uberdata, but it's worth it.

now i feel a little better about going with the VAFC hack with turbo... i will eventually upgrade to EMS later...

I ran with the VAFC setup for a little over two years and it was great. I got a little detonation when I was road racing it on hot days and the engine was heat-soaked, but a bottle of octane boost solved that, and the hood vent helped too.

lets go shooting!

weston did you tune with a wideband when you were hacking?
I was just tuned with crome two nights ago. the car idle's perfectly and I know I'm running a safe tune. the car is a hell of a lot more responsive now...and its faster. it cost me less than buying a new safc too.

i will be using a PLX M300 and will have tobi tune it very conservatively...

Yeah, I wouldn't dare road race a turbo Honda that wasn't tuned. I tuned it on a dyno with a wideband when I had the AFC... it was pretty easy to tune. For the Uberdata setup, I bought my own wideband, since I'd rather pay $300 for that then spend the time and money going to a dyno every time I make a change or want to develop a new map. For the ignition tuning, I just came up with three candidate ignition maps and tried them on the dyno, then used the best parts from each of them to build the map I'm using now. It could still use a little more tuning, but I already have a fatter powerband than the VAFC setup.

I Love my uberdata; been rocking it since 1.2.

Note for potential uber users, though, don't expect a ton of support, or any updates. The guys on the board are adding plugins and whatnot, but Blakie (the only guy with the soucre) has gone MIA, so i don't think any future versions are coming. Use 1.7, as well, since the 1.8-1.9 are garbage. If you're using an ostrich stick with ost 2

:werd: 1.7 with some add-ons is the way to go. And NEVER click "yes" when it prompts you to save when you close the program... I've had that corrupt the file twice now. Always do a normal save before you go to close the program.
