I just installed a new distributor in my car...everything runs perfect up until when it gets hot from driving around for a while. When it gets hot, I slightly step on the pedal to give it gas, and the car jerks a little bit. When I had the old distributor instlled, it didn't do that, and the VTEC kicked in but didn't go anywhere...now that the new distributor is installed the VTEC kicks in real good and the car jerks a little bit when you slightly step on the gas pedal. What do you guys think it could be?

Could it be detonation response from incorrect timing? Make sure your distributor is properly clocked.

How would I do that? You mean like moving around the position of the distributor?

If your position triggers are in the distributor (quite likely), then moving the distributor will advance and retard the timing across the operating range. This can cause detonation, which could be the bucking you are feeling. The knock response system senses the detonation and retards the timing, then adds it back until it hears knock again. This back-and-forth of the timing is the bucking you are feeling, and it can happen multiple times per second.

Honda should have some way to put the ECU into an inspection mode, usually with a jumper. Verify it's idling right with an accurate tach and adjust the timing with a timing light.

If you don't have to tools and know-how to do this, take it to a mechanic!

Take your car to someone who can adjust your timing before you break something from messing with it. Call Moe at Speed Image and he'll get you runnin' good. 303.922.6681 (M-Sat)
