Looking at getting some new shoes for the summer months...

Want to be able to take the turns like a mad man.

Looking at probably a

17inch by 7 or 8 rim

Now tire width and heigth?

Is 40 about the best for performance vs ride quality or step it up to 45?

I'd go 205/45/17 or 215/40/17 for 17x7. Go wider for 17x8 unless you want your rim lips exposed for easy curbagery.

7 or 8 width rim would be better???

so are 40 or 45s better for cornering?

depends on the rating of the tires. 40s are great, just might fuck up your rims. why not get 16's?..

335/30's should work.

why are you going to go 17's for auto x....15's is what i would do with 205/50/15...wheels are lighter which will help with your times. Wheel width has basically nothing to do with cornering ability

I will disagree with you on wheel width.. Although I dont have much to go by. I would assume though that more wheel touching the pavement = more traction. But with that said I think you probably need more power to be able to turn the wheels.. Otherwise 15s would look really funny in big wheel wells.

huh, i hope you don't auto x on stock suspension??

15x7's. 205/50/15's. :D

:werd: (assuming it has a compatible circumference to his stock tire size.) It's not only the most appropriate size, but also an affordable size. On 15x7's, you can run 225/45-15 too, but those are a little harder to come by.

As for the sidewall "profile" numbers, comparing 40 vs 45 is completely meaningless... those are just percentages of the tire with. 195/45 actually has a thinner sidewall than a 225/40. Also, any decent cornering tire will have steel reinforced sidewalls, so there's no sense in running ricer rubber-band tires to reduce sidewall flex. The widths of these tires will vary as well... for example, both Falken Azenis and Kumho V710's in 205/50-15 are noticably wider than your typical 205 tire.

Wheel width has basically nothing to do with cornering ability

Actually, it has a lot to do with it, but that doesn't mean it's worth running 17's to get a wider wheel.

There's nothing wrong with autocrossing on a stock suspension... just run in a stock class and don't run R-compounds. The first season is a lot more learning than being competitive anyway, and I always say that it's better to start with less to work with so that you don't develop bad habits.

the difference is not noticable anyways, thats what I was trying to point out...

And also i think auto x'ing or road course on stock suspension is just frustrating...being as it is not as fun as a better handling setup

I would guess my stock suspension is better then 4 out of 5 ricer setups that are being used.

:werd: I've seen some real crap on the market. You sure won't see many ricer suspensions at an autocross.
