I've been looking at these two for a little while now (240 and AE86, because they seem to be the cheapest FRs), and can't seem to figure out a good price range. I know these cars can go for anywhere between 1000 to 4000, but what I'm wondering is:
For 240sx:
About how much for car: ?
About how much/what for performance upgrades to make a decent Drifter: ? How much am I looking at? Also same thing for an AE86. Are these the cheapest drifters?

I'm tryin to figure exactly about how much EVERYTHING would cost including Car, Upgrades, Tuning for the Upgrades, and...anything else you guys could think of. Just to get started. I'm not looking for an Enjuku drifter or anything.

Final question:
Anybody know if the SR20DET is legal in Colorado for emissions? does it pass fog test and all that crap? I know i'm a newb in this, and will probably getted flamed for these questions, but if i can just get at least ONE solid answer on these things i'm good. Thanks alot people- this forum is really cool.

You'd be looking at about $2000-$4000 for a s13 240sx, then skies the limit on how much you could spend modifying it after that. AE86's are rare, I wouldn't cross your fingers on finding one.

oh, and put your flame suit on, because everybody here is going to make fun of you for wanting to build a 'drift' car.

i know a guy who spent around 26 grand to buy the 95 240sx and then building the sr20det black top engine swap to boost 26lbs and to get the body looking nice...

RIGHTEOUS - i believe the sr is emissions legal, many shops do the swaps and if it wasnt emissions legal then i would think they would be more sly about advertising them.

I would say go for a 240 only on the basis that it is a newer car. If you get an AE86 you have to consider that they are quite a bit older, and consequently harder to find replacement parts for things like body panels, interior trims and such. If your goal is to have a nice clean car then an 86 would be a good challenge (you dont see many, and i have yet to see a good clean one in Colorado). While there are many upgrades for either car, the 240 is, in my opinion more supported and less expnensive to modify.

p.s.- dont take me wrong, i dont dislike the AE86, if i had the time and resources, and the patience i would take a corolla anyday

actually you would fail pretty quick with the sr20 in you car unless you get the proper paper work since they both have different emission components...you would have to get a dr2365 form before you take it to emission so they know that you have motor swap
