OK I have a d16z6 in my 96 civic coupe, and i'm still not sure if I should keep the d16 and turbo it, or upgrade to a B-Series? What do you guys think would be the best thing for me to do? Thanx
B-series swap, then turbo.

ive owned a 1992 b16a hatch, a 1992 b16a supercharged hatch(same car), and a 1994 turboed d15b7 sedan, and id have to say that the turboed car is my favorite to drive. so if you have the money....b series then turbo. if not, turbo the d16.

turboed d16, you can get a 200hp tune and be perfectly safe on the streets.

turbo the D, when it blows, switch manifolds and buy a B.

i agree with almost all of the posts above...
if you can afford it do a turbo B.
i would take a stock LS turbo over a stock dohc vtec turbo though because you can run more boost and make more power on the LS.
otherwise i would turbo the D. i've had a GSR powered civic, and a boosted D15B7 and a boosted D16z6, and the turbo'd D's were way more fun than the gsr motor, and it was a shitty turbo kit on both.

BRILLIANT! thats exactly what i would do if i couldnt buy a B right off the bat.

What kind of turbo kit was it?
What kind of turbo kit would you guys recommend for a d16z6?

If you want a kit , the jg edelbrock kit is pretty decent. id rather do a custom kit, but thats me.

What are you pefromance goals.. Stock d16z6 maxes out around 200whp.
If I were you screw the Bseries build the Dseries engine and turbo it, if your doing all the work yourself minus the engine assembly you can build your block for around $1500 throw it back in your car put together a turbo kit for around $1000 and you could put down close to 300whp with the right tuning.

The edelbrock kit is actually really nice. The only complaint I have with the one that I tuned was that it put the IAT sensor pre-turbo, so its harder to get a consistent a/f ratio with varying iat's. That's easily correctable though :)
BTW, d-series are very potent with tuning:
Here's a 100% stock motor (jsut upgraded to headstuds):

i was using a home made kit with an HF manifold and 14b off a first gen eclipse.
as for the person who said spend $1500 on building your motor, and $1000 on turbo kit to get 300 HP..
1) your probably gonna need more than $1000 for a turbo kit... i'd say atleast $1500
2) personally i would buy an LS swap rather than spend $1500 building a D-series. a stock LS can easily make over 300HP and still be reliable with good tuning... but then again as servion showed a properly tuned stock D series can make 300HP....

a turbo B will be more powerful, but i have experienced many turbo B's and D's and a turbo D16z6 is still a very fast set up even on the stock motor if you do it right, i say save the money for now and turbo the D, you wont be dissapointed, it will be a monster on the streets, my reccomendations on a turbo set up,
-tubular log style manifold, find them all over the net for $250 (external wastegate style)
-ssac external wastegate, find at www.xs-power.com for $130,(this waste gate is identical to a tial 38 mm that costs $200+, and works just the same, i have tested it and know, get the 8-9 psi spring)
-a "remanufactured" garrett t3 turbo specs: .48 a/r exhaust .60 a/r compressor 60 trim, they are perfect for a stock D16z6, you can find them all over the net for about $300
- a "stealthmode" oil line kit, found at www.tunertoys.com for $75
-a 31"x6"x3" front mount intercooler, found at www.customcoachofamerica.com these intercoolers fit hondas very well, look sick as fuck, and are made very well, better than e bay crap, and cost $175! find a better deal....i dare ya...
-dsm 450 cc injectors, find used for like $50
-obd2-obd1 jumper harness, find at www.rywire.com for $75 (obd2a-obd1 harness)
-get an obd1 p28 vtec ecu, find them all over for like $75-$100
-buy silicone couplers and t-clamps from napa for about $50
-have an exhaust shop make you a downpipe and charge pipes for about $250
-a boost gauge, $50
- a blow off valve $50-$200 ( depends on what you want)
- and finally contact jeremy at www.serviontuning.com, and have him chip the p28 ecu, and then have him street or dyno tune you car with neptune, im not sure on the cost of this, he would have to tell you, but he does package deals.
thats a total of about $1,600 PLUS the cost of chipping/tuning, and I gauantee it will be way faster than any pre fab kit for $2800, and it will be far more reliable as well, now that i have taken all the fun out of building a turbo kit for you, go and do it then tell me how hard it rips when your done...:) god I love to turbo hondas!

I agree that the turbo D is the way to go but I would recommend having an extra car lying around for when you blow your rings, or need a new clutch, or one of the other many many things associated with a turbo Honda. Yes they are fun, as a previous owner of a bad ass turbo D i'm speaking from expereience, but the maintinance level of the car rises considerably. You HAVE to change your oil every 2500 miles, and you HAVE to spend the extra money on 91+ gas, and you HAVE to constantly be looking under the hood to make sure everything checks out, because if you ignore some weird sound in a turbo'd honda, you're setting yourself up for catastrophic results. As opposed to a weird sound in a shit box like the one I drive now where I really don't pay any attention to it...
Turbo the bitch. If you dare...
