View Full Version : Cruising is now illegal in Westminster

For those of you who didn't catch Fox 31 news tonight: Westminster has a new ordinance... Cruising is now illegal and carries a $125 - $350 fine. It's illegal to "pass a traffic control point 3 times within 3 hours from 9pm - 4am on Fridays and Saturdays". They still have to install the signs (designating those control points), which will likely be at the end of May.

I'm no lawyer, but that just doesn't seem right. Apparently, Westminster is the first city to impose such an ordiance, so it'll be interesting to see if it holds up in court. The problems that come to my mind are things like... how can they prove that I passed this control point 3 times within 3 hours; surely the cops can't track every car. And how can they prove it was me driving every time, what if I let a friend drive for all but the last time. They would have to get cameras setup that captures not only the license plate, but the driver's face as well.

I think that if I pay all the rediculous taxes required to own and operate my vehicle, then I should be entitled to drive it on any public road that I please. But, this is the government, it doesn't have to be fair or make any sense at all.

In any case, Westminster sucks. It gets more crowded and dumber every week. And the cops are constantly harassing and trying to intimidate us, which only goes to remind everyone exactly why they get called "pigs". And now they've passed this dumb ordinance which won't solve anything. People are still going to cruise, just somewhere else. Any ideas where?

So, if your a pizza delivery boy, its illegal to go back to work and pick up more pizza in 3 times in 3 hours? Hmmmm...

FYI I've seen similar laws in other states, they've held up.

Newt2 and I have only been to Westy twice in the last year, mostly because we don't like parades. That place got lame long ago anyway.
I guess some other place will now become a cruising area.

Well, IMHO "cruising" Westminster is a huge joke. There is no cruising, only sitting at stoplights. I truely feel for the residents of the area, trying to get in and out of their neighborhoods with the literally thousands of cars trying to run the loop.

For those who would say "where are we going to go now", no idea. But it's about time that this chapter of local car history gets put to bed.

I've only been up there "cruising" a handful of times. It's such a waste of time and fuel that I wonder why I even tried.

I'm really curious as well about how they could track every single car... That would take a lot of manpower I think

I agree. 99% are just highschool kids that have just got there license and have nothing better to do. What is so fun about driving in a circle and stopping at the same stoplights for 3 hours. get a life. ;gay;

More waste of tax-payers money if you asked me.
The cops are going to have videos. Last night on Fox31 News, it showed cops shooting videos of 2 Hondas racing on 88th. The cops shot the video from the Wendy's parking lot.
It'll be interesting to see if they have the resources (our money) to keep up a program like that year-around. They know they can't. That's why they're limiting the enforcement of this ordinance Fri-Sat from 9pm-4am. It's stupid.

I haven't been in Westy in a while, mainly because too many kids being out of hand, and causing accidents. Which is the main reason they want to shut down the cruising.

i used to go up there when i got really bored, but i realized its just a waste of gas, not even worth the time. but i doubt they will enforce it that much

they'll just move it to another cruising area..... hopefully it'll be a longer stretch of road than that one.

The "no cruising law" will hold up. I am from Omaha, NE and they did the same thing to a couple of populare "cruising areas". ANd shortly after the signs went up the cruising stopped almost overnight.

I went to Westy once earlier this year... when it was cold and I thought it was pretty damn lame. I mean when we went there wern't even that many cars, compared to what there is when it's nice out, and it's not like you could even have any "fun" with all the cops.

I just don't get it... I guess I am getting to old? [heh]

Here's a more in depth article: http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/local/article/0,1299,DRMN_15_1104065,00.html

I've also heard that there's been 4 fatalaties out there, along with an increasing number of high speed chases and people shooting at the police. I didn't realize it was so nuts out there.

And yeah, I'd have to agree that the loop is getting lamer every time, and it's completely pointless to go out there when it's so ridiculously crowded. You have to wait until after midnight, when all the kids go home, then it can actually be fun. I'd still much rather just hang out with people, but the cops wont let us just sit and talk, so we end up driving around in our cars all night. :(

As for the new area, Thornton has been suggested, around the Thornton Town Center area (Grant street, between 102nd ave and 98th place). I'm not sure how fond I am of that idea, seeing as how I live right across the street! But, it would make a good loop. I would expect the new loop would be from Thornton Parkway (aka 92nd Ave) at Grant St -> Washington St -> 102nd Ave -> Grant St -> Thornton Parkway. I still don't know if that's going to happen or not, I guess I'll have to wait and see...

I take 92nd to wads home every night after work and that includes Fri, Sat. I hope they dont mistake me for a cruiser. Wait I forgot most police officers (aka PIGs) will stereotype any 16-? year old with a hooked up ride. I guess their just jealous they drive those ugly crown vic.:fu: :cop:

I usually go either up to Highlands Ranch or over by SW Plaza. Up on Quebeq, the cops don't fuck with you at all, it's amazing. They just roll through, say hi and leave. Never seen anything like it.

I like rolling through there on the way to/from the movies and watching the "Stupid Circus"
Crusing used to be the shit on Colfax, lots of parade if you like that, lots of hanging in parking lots if you liked that, and if you liked racing there were plenty of those going around. Something for everyone.

Man, That sucks ass! I don't know what I would do if I was told that I was not aloud to drive where and when I wanted. After all, we all pay for the roads to be built, if you drive safe and not race, whats the problem with cruising.

We should get all the EBP civics and hit the loop Friday! Try to track that! Seriously, I'm not stressing over this. I'm sick of being singled out because of my Horsemen sticker on my back window. Just because I'm affiliated with Horsemen Racing dosen't mean that I'm racing all the time, I'm just trying to get to my sisters house! They do like to single out the imports, we never got pulled in my buddys Camaro, which also has the same Horsemen sticker.

that's because those crown vics would never be able to keep up with a camaro, but their radio will, but by that time they've already lost the cops and turned a few times and are in some neighborhood. Not saying that camaros are the shit, but those crown vics suck.

The last time I actually went cruising around westy was about a little less than a year ago. That was when I got my SC installed and had my friends with me from Cali. I'm pretty sure we killed quite a few cars that night. Luckily I didn't get any racing tickets.

Since then, I only drive through it basically at times, but never around it anymore. I know it's lame now and I'm kind of glad they are stopping it because you do have to think about the people shopping, eating, and living in that area that need that space on the roads more than the teens. Although I realize that we do pay for the roads, and have the priviledge to pretty much drive wherever we want, there is a line that those teens have crossed and it's gone too far now. If only people cruised in a less densely populated area, then it might be a different situation. But no.

I live in the middle of the loop, and yes it can get busy, but you just know to go against the flow of traffic. If I go out on the loop during the evening, its always in the opposite direction. It doesn't really effect me too much in that respect.

Its too bad, but I guess we've had it coming. I see so much stupid crap happen out there. Anytime a car load of kids in anything resembling a sports car is near me, and I'm in my Talon, they always try to race me. I guess I'm not really into street racing somewhere that has TONS of cops around, both marked and unmarked.

Being a motorcycle rider, I'm amazed by the number of non-helmeted riders on crotch rockets. Most of them look to be HS kids with girls in tow.

I guess can't really say much though, as I did plenty of stupid things like that not /too/ long ago.

I was going to point out that west Colfax used to be the old cruising spot. I guess kids would race up my street when we first moved in. However I was only like 6months old so I can't say that I remember it.

Anyway, I think that it is a very good possibility since there is a new mall being built there. (by the way I used to live right where Youngfield bleeds into Colfax, now I live in the Estates above Stevenson and the Fair Grounds) Speaking of the mall, my girlfreind informs me that it is supposed to be an outlet mall, which is apparently not as good as say Cherry Creek or Flat Irons. I guess I'll just have to wait until it opens to figure it out. And all the construction is a real pain in the ass.

Like two years ago, when they started construction, the dynamite blasts would shake my house like an earth quake!

Yea, no kidding, I feel out of place wearing my helmet and jacket while riding. I think about 2 out of every 10 riders I see actually wear a helmet...sad. Wonder what ppl think when I'm riding to the track with my 1 piece leather on though :p

Hey Hey eric, its paul. Finally got registered up here. The whole loop thing got crazy as hell. I remember one night i went going back home after only going around 1/2 a time. Took me 45 minutees to get that far, i thought fuckin waste of gas and left. The cops havent really been enforcing the 3 times in 3 hours rule though. I went there a few weeks ago to see what would happen. There were actually quitee a few people up there. I went around 5 times in about 20 minutes, they didnt do a thing to any of the 25 or 30 cars i was around. Kinda funny. Anyhoo the new location if near the mall would probably be fun to go to a few times, then everyone will find out about it and it will be just like westy. Guess ill have to find more partys to :drink: at

How gay. Pigs and the city of westminster for that fact can go to hell.

The no crusing thing isn't so bad, it was getting way too crowded and people were being reckless and stupid; it was once a lot of fun though. What pisses me off is them harassing us if we peacefully hang out somewhere (like 7-11, where the owner is apparently ok with it, but the cops aren't) and then pulling people over for no reason. Not to mention the fact that they are so busy bothering us that real criminals are going nuts and breaking into cars left and right.

We think they sent some undercovers out to 7-11 several weeks ago... Everyone knew something was up when two guys (with a cop build and a cop haircut) that no one knew pulled up in black old Civic drove up and started asking all kinds of questions. Some people also said they saw equipment in the car, as well as license plate numbers written down. Someone confronted them about the license plate numbers, but the guys claimed they were phone numbers or something. I don't know what they thought we were doing, but they also tried following a bunch of us, so some people arranged a plan to lose them and it apparently worked. Haven't seen them since. :) Of course, it's been a while since we have been able to hang out at 7-11 for any length of time too.

In any case, doing anything in Westminster is a waste of time anymore.

Gah! Now i can barely even go cosmic bowling with friends up at the Rocky Mountain lanes anymore. Left with some friends after bowling for a few and there had to be at least 3 pigs that pulled out after us, 2 followed us to wads, and they didnt turn around till Jeffco! Wonder how many people broke into cars during the timee those 2 pigs followed us? I dont normally have a problem with cops, but in westy i cant even consider them cops cuz to me they seem more like corrupt assholes bent on fuckin only with teenage kids. Bastards.... :fu:

The only thing "cruising" has done for westminster is give the Westy PD a reason to hassle anyone who drives by the loop. I'm glad the loop is being shutdown, I just hope I dont get some BS ticket because I drive a car that is mildy modified and increadably slow.
