After missing my tuning session due to family issues, I finally got the UP, DP & 2.25" axle back on the Legacy GT (05) along with a Perrin panel filter (silencer removed).

After install, I let the car warm up at idle so I could check for exhaust leaks. There was smoke coming up from the lower engine compartment, but it did NOT smell like exhaust. More like belts being broken in or rubbing somewhere... but I checked all of those and found nothing.

So I took it for a test run, first taking it easy and then getting on it. Impressed at Cobb's Stage II map I was. When I parked the car, let it cool down for a while and then restarted the car, the smoke was non-existant! :wtf: It hasn't come back either!

The spooling of the turbo is now more pronounced (as expected) and I can hear the BOV much more clearly as well!

The noise I'm not familiar with is as follows:

During moderate to heavy acceleration under load I hear this sound that can only be described as somebody telling you to be quiet by putting their finger across their mouth and making the noise "SSSHHHHHH" but only much louder and more coarse as if it's a demand more than request. Almost raspy!

When I let off the throttle, the sound disappears and I can hear the BOV doing it's duty.

At certain points (haven't pin pointed yet), this noise will come on during the moderate AND heavy acceleration, but it will only stay around up untill a certain RPM range (higher) and disappear! Then... again, it's the BOV when I let off.

Note: This noise cannot be heard during free rev in neutral, which has made it VERY difficult to pin point. Only in gear during throttle application.

Any ideas, experience or input are greatly appreciated!

You're getting better flow in your exhaust now that you've opened it up some. When you just rev it out of gear, the turbo doesnt spool so you dont hear much of any noise. Do you havea boost gauge in the car to check the boost levels?

Nope. Been searching for an A-Pillar setup for two guages with no avail. After everything is said and done (couple more powa mods), I'd DEF like to have a boost & AF guage.

Much learning I have Jedi Master! For scerd I was... indeed!

In my experience.... the ramen comes much sooner than this! ;NutKick;

The initial smell you describe is very probably just machine oil burning off the new parts.

The hiss could be normal, or it could be a pre-turbo exhaust leak, put your hands Firmly over the tailpipes and check for leaks this could take a freind or two depending on the span of your arms.

when my friend got his downpipe installed on his wrx, it was smokey too. i guess its normal to see it though.

I really want a legacy GT, I think they are beautiful cars. I really would have a lot of trouble trying to decide between a G35 or LGT.. I LOVE them both.

The G35 is next in line for me.

Once I can find the truck (DD) I want and get the proper research in for the engine management on the TT setups that are available, then I may make the move.

Still quite a bit left to look up though. Some have stories of triumph, some are stories of horror with adding FI to the VQ35. Have to find out whether or not it's absolutely necessary to build the engine before going that route.

Love the car though. The look, the fit, the finish is awesome! Just hits the pocket book like John Holmes on Levitra & Focus Factor!

the smoke you were seeing is the chemical cosmolean (sp?) they coat it on all exhaust pipes and inside the mufflers. it burns off and should never come back. your weird noise your hearing could be your wastegate shuttering to keep the boost up. happens on wrxs all the time

what they said, you don't spool boost without a load, so it won't hiss out of gear. unless u smell exhaust, i'd say you probably don't have any irregularities

note: if you do have a pre-turbo leak, you'll hear the engine deep and throaty, same sound as piped out but probably not as loud. even really little leaks are noisy.

Sounds to me like it could just be the wastegate ...

Why such a small exhaust?

It's 2.5" at the cat and all the way back to the Y pipe. Then it splits into 2.25" I think that should work for now. I'm not looking to break records and I don't want the decibel level to get outta hand.

NOTE I do get an exhaust smell (unburnt fuel) under heavy (I mean heavy) acceleration.

I do know that I have an exhaust leak. It's back at the axle back exhaust. The shop that did the work obviously didn't know what they were doing. Alligator welds & holes.... after having the car for two full work days! WTF over?

Gotta get that fixed.

The map I'm running is rather rich as well.... for note.

Congrats on the mods. When the weather gets nicer we need to meet up and exchange rides.

Werd!

That's IF I could fit in the Vette..... which is highly unlikely.

By then.... I'll have the 18G, FMIC, injectors & a pro tune from TDC with a full cat back exhaust from a reputable shop!

Git'R Dun!

You would be surprised. It is an american car afterall. The side bolsters are adjustable on the seats and there is a surprising amount of leg room.
