View Full Version : Best way to cut a silicone coupling cleanly w/o a band saw?

Just got some replacement 2 3/8" (60 mm) couplings from Road Race Engineering for the MR2; need to shorten one by less than an inch. This shit is thick and tough - poking at it with a fresh utility knife blade is not encouraging.

Any ideas?

Metal sheet cutter works pretty good.

If you can get a piece of junk pipe that can slide right into the silicone fitting then cut it that should keep it from collapsing.

I just use a sharp utility knife myself. Draw a line all the way around 1st to make sure you stay straight.

Hey, that's not a bad idea. I guess I'll just get to it with the old Stanley 10-099 then.

Thanks for the help.

I usually put them on a pipe and use a hose clamp as a guide for the blade. Perfect cuts every time.

All those suggestions + Dremel?

Dremel would liquify the area it was cutting.

The utility knife worked just fine for cutting the coupling. Of course the turbo oil feed line that I just replaced didn't seal to the block for some reason, so I now have a monstrous pool of oil under the car to mop up, and I get to take the oil line back off the car again and figure out WTF I need to fix it.

Arrrg - I hate working on cars. Some stupid ultra-annoying shit like this always happens.

I just mark it, smash the hose, and then use my jig-saw, just as good as any other way I have ever used.
