View Full Version : What gun should I get next?

Ok, after buying my first gun on Saturday and going shooting yesterday, I decided I love guns. I now need to decide what gun to buy next. So far I've been thinking about an AK-47, AR-15 or a mini-14. I was told that the mini-14's take the same ammo as an AR-15. I dont know if thats true or not. Any input would be great or other suggestions. Im gonna get a shot gun too but those are cheap so I didnt include that. Thanks guys!

Not sure what the Mini-14's take (never looked into them), but the AR-15 takes 5.56mm NATO (military caliber) and .223 Remington (what you get at Walmart)... The better AR-15's are chambered for 5.56 and compatible with .223 (possibly slightly reduced accuracy, but I haven't had any issues), and the cheap ones are chambered for .223 and can't fire 5.56 (too much pressure). You can also get different calibers for the AR-15, like 9mm and even .50 cal, but they are hard to come by and non-standard. The gun was originally intended for .308, but the Army wanted 5.56mm/.223 instead. The AR-10 is basically the same thing, but chambered for .308. I prefer .223 myself... it's about 19 cents a round for Winchester 55-grain and is readily available. The equivilent ammo in 5.56mm with a NATO stamp on it is M193, which is about 20 cents per round for Winchester.
Anyway, you are certainly welcome to shoot mine and see how you like it. I'm very pleased with it myself.
Other. None... and... return the one you just bought.

Also, consider that an AR-15 is going to run you $700+ new (the few that cost less for new ones are not respectable brands, so I wouldn't waste your money on those). The $350 AK-47's that we were looking at during the show were Romainian WASR-10's that were converted to take hi-capacity mags. They appeared to have a single hammer trigger on them, which may have the trigger snap-back problem. You can search Google and get plenty of info and opinions on the WASR-10's. Also, 7.62x39 ammo is a bit hard to come by... You can get it at a show or some gun shops, but it's not something you can just run to Walmart and get. An AK is still definately a cool gun to have in your collection though... it's just more of a collector's piece than something you'd shoot all the time with (it doesn't have great accuracy either).

I voted ar-15, but I have a sweet Israeli Galil in 5.56 if you wanna spend some real coin for a sweet ar/ak hybrid that outshoots both. Hammer forged barrel, flip up tritium sights. A true rarity since it has been banned from import since the early 90s. But very pricey.

depends on how much you want to spend...
there are a lot of cool guns... you can get a glock (i'm a glock lover) that you can drop in sand, shoot then freeze it, then heat it and it will still shoot.
an AR15 will run you around $800 (i got my bushmaster for $600). They are a lot of fun, you can buy every part for it if anything breaks. Customizable more than some cars.
AK47, ammo you more than likely have to buy at a gun show. Parts might be hard to come by. But how can you beat a gun that has proven itself in war all these years.
You can go to walmart and get a ruger 10-22 for $200 and play with it all day and not spend no more than $30 on ammo for like 5000 rounds.
but fuck it, just come with us to the COAR15 meet and you can shoot everyones guns. there will be AR15, AR10, rifles, 1022s, handguns, uzi's, and even some .50 cal.
one buy on COAR15 is selling this Watson .50 cal here is a link...

Weston the light went out maybe 10 minutes after we went shooting the last time so I returned it. It was a POS and lost it's zero anyways. It mounted in the rails however it slid on and the plastic was not large enough to make it stay put and keep zero.
OH OH and the light burned out after maybe a whole 2 hours of use? The laser kept working still just wouldn't hold zero.

you need at least...
1 handgun
1 rifle
1 shotgun
start there and then add on... since you already have the handgun, get a rifle or shotgun...

Thats what I'm thinking. My goal is to have 3-4 handguns, AR-15, ak-47, a shotgun or two and maybe another rifle. Just gotta decide the order in which to buy them. :) I might go with the AK for now since its a little cheaper. Ill research some other guns too.

here are specs from the site...
The Defender 8-Shot allows you to be prepared for any unseen obstacle that might come your way while in the backcountry. It's easy to pack and carry, and handles both buckshot and rifled slugs easily. The rugged Defender 8-Shot features an eight-shot magazine capacity, 18" cylinder bore barrel, non-glare metal surfaces and a lightweight composite stock and forearm. Choose from the full stock version with a removable front TRUGLO® fiber optic sight, the pistol grip model, or the combo version with both pistol grip and full stock included. The full stock model is available in both 12 and 20 gauge.
i would get it, but i want a ruger 10-22... i can just a shorter barrel for my 11-87

Get a mini 14 (mine has a folding stock), I use it for everything, ammo is cheap .223 that you can get at walmart or anywhere else, semi auto, can buy anything you want for it aftermarket, alot cheaper then an AR/AK. I have an AK47, use to own an AR15 but I'd rather take my mini 14 with me anywhere I go.

Guess what I just added to the collection...
http://www.TurboLS.net/pics/SW9VE.jpg
:D I opted for the 9mm version... cheaper ammo and it holds 16 rounds instead of 14, plus a little less recoil, just at the cost of being not quite as effective as .40 cal if I need to shoot someone (I'd prefer the AR-15 for that anyway ;) ).

yeah, i love glock too. i would vote akm-47, but you can't get a genuine one here, only some cuban/egyptian replica.
though i found this site http://www.ak47.com/products.asp?cat=10
seem like they have almost true ak 47, only it's called Vepr (russian for wild boar).

Yeah, it's really hard to find a quality/authentic AK here, and when you do, it's a collector's item and is priced really high. Most of what you'll find in this country are Romainian WASR-10's that were converted to take high-capacity magazines... those go for about $300-$350 new. It's my understanding that they actually have some US-made parts swapped into them because of some legalities with importing/selling them.
