View Full Version : axles (not just for hondas)?

basic question, how do I make the actual axle(s) stronger?
I'm looking for ideas from anyone on how this could be done. The little cv joint tripod deal is not a problem right now, it's the axle shaft going between joints.
pretty much from what I've read, the stock honda axles are to "hard" which is what cause them to crack and break at high torque. So besides getting aftermarket axles, or making my own from scratch, what are some ideas?
it's just one of those "why not try" type things.
So pretty much I need something to keep the axle from twisting.
Maybe weld a "shaft" over the axle?

hmmm, no clue. PFI had Mark Williams make axles for them... but that was with a sponsership. They broke axles all the damn time. But now things should be different :D Good luck

yeah, I had planned on going with the driveshaftshop.com stage 2 axles in a bit, once the turbo goes on and I put the lsd in, but I just wanted to fuck with something, so I figured the axles would be a good place to improve until all the beefy stuff goes in hehe.
I think it's just me getting excited that it's getting really close to running so I need something to keep me busy.

broken axles or broken tranny??? hmmmm....keep your axles weak because that's your fusible link on the transmission
if the axles don't break where will the shock go?? straight to your transmission!!!

this gives me bad dreams everynight hehe.
it all sucks though. I'll be using a quaife, which is supposed to not break, and if it does they pay me.
But see, with the power I hope to put down I wanted to use a 24.5"-25" slick and stock axles won't hold that.
or I could step down to a smaller like 23" or something but then traction is going to suffer.
ahhhhhH!!!!
i just need to win the lotto or something.
who wants to sponser a broke ass kid? hehehe

you could try to weld the seams of the joint and axles. it would make the splines bond with the joint so more of the torque is transferred to the shaft not the spline surfaces. From what I hear though unless you change the material of the axles to something stronger it is a winless battle.

It is commen practice here in japan to shot peen the axles. On most axles it is suppose to make them 15% stronger.
