I'm not a Civic guy either, but pretty much any FWD Honda is just a basic car to build onto. Most are nothing special out of the box... it's the aftermarket that makes them worthwhile, and the better ones have proven themselves at the track.

Supras were not designed to get good gas mileage. They're twin-turboed from the factory, and stock, will kick the shit out of your Mustang. Get used to it.

Secondly, my Celica also came turboed from the factory. Since 1/4 racing seems to be your obsession, I'll make the point that stock for stock, an AllTrac would rape your Mustang from a dig.

The cars you mentioned were designed to be fast in a straight line. Sure, that's racing, but let's see one of those cars keep up on a road course, the dirt, or wet pavement. Some of the cars you mentioned are also slower than dog shit out of the box, and would get served by a stock Civic.

Furthermore, you're ragging on the Civic as an "economy car", but then you say that gas mileage doesn't matter? Get your arguments straight.

And finally - aftermarket or not, I'll spend less on my Celica than you will on your Mustang, and I'll still be faster on dry pavement, wet pavement, snow, and dirt.

Some people cant afford a sports car when they are young and in college, so they end up buying a cheaper car and slowly putting money into it as they get it.

Besides this fact, insurance plays a huge part as well. Just to insure my Civic is 200 dollars a month because of where I live, and my age. I cannot imagine paying insurance on any sort of muscle car.

Lastly, practicallity comes into play. There is no way I could get by with a two seater, or a sports car with a tiny backseat, and I am sure a lot of other people feel the same way.

Actually, this site was founded LONG before fast and the furious. It was actually started by me. The initial purpose was to keep in touch with the guys I raced with at bandimere.

I definitely wouldn't consider an STI, EVO, etc to be an "economy" car, but whatever. The point is people work with what they have and they enjoy doing it. There is ALWAYS someone faster no matter what you drive.

What gets me laughing is the kids that have mommy and/or daddy buy them a Vette and they go out and race it and wreck it. Or the guys that buy a Vette for 40-60+k and try to race some import that has a built motor and turbo that cost 20k total and then beats that Vette! Shit I got a lot in to my car and I still wouldn't trade it for a Vette or a close equivalent. Buy the time I get the turbo on I will be able to beat those Vettes. I can also do it again and have two cars for the same price as the 1 Vette.

Now not to say a modified Vette couldn't beat me but not to many people are moding a Vette or equivalent. I have built motors for people that want a domestic to do the quarter in 10 seconds..... its not cheap. I can build a import to do a quarter in 10 seconds for a fraction of the cost. Not to mention as Skaterkid said suspension and fuel makes a big part of the race. Look at the F1 race with that chick.... she should have won but she ran outta fuel. I was on a race crew this last year and can tell you that out of the 20 some cars in the circuit we all have with in 5 hp of eachother. We spend 99% of the time in the pits setting the suspesion up and making sure the gas tank was as full as possible. It makes the race. One of our cars will go 13 seconds faster than any other car there and it's not all car, its the driver too. But if you put a car on the track properly set up, built and with a good driver it can win everytime. I can make your mustang win a race but not at the cost a import can do it at. You can talk your shit but you can't do shit for what an import can. Just think, Honda makes those F1 motors, 3L V8 with Turbos and heavily modified (soon to be a 2.8L) and at 4+ times the hp a mustang makes. Imagine what they would do to a 4cyl if they had to run one in a F1! I am willing to bet that Westons car would own your mustang on a SCCA track. I bet he'd let you pick the track too! Honda Challenge? BTCC? Speedvision World Challenge? SE-R Cup? My favorite is the T2 class where Mustangs and Vettes were challenged by Neon SRT-4's and were won by Evo's and STI's. Or the guys that buy a Vette for 40-60+k and try to race some import that has a built motor and turbo that cost 20k total and then beats that Vette! Shit I got a lot in to my car and I still wouldn't trade it for a Vette or a close equivalent. Buy the time I get the turbo on I will be able to beat those Vettes. I can also do it again and have two cars for the same price as the 1 Vette.

Now not to say a modified Vette couldn't beat me but not to many people are moding a Vette or equivalent. I have built motors for people that want a domestic to do the quarter in 10 seconds..... its not cheap. I can build a import to do a quarter in 10 seconds for a fraction of the cost. Not to mention as Skaterkid said suspension and fuel makes a big part of the race. Look at the F1 race with that chick.... she should have won but she ran outta fuel. I was on a race crew this last year and can tell you that out of the 20 some cars in the circuit we all have with in 5 hp of eachother. We spend 99% of the time in the pits setting the suspesion up and making sure the gas tank was as full as possible. It makes the race. One of our cars will go 13 seconds faster than any other car there and it's not all car, its the driver too. But if you put a car on the track properly set up, built and with a good driver it can win everytime. I can make your mustang win a race but not at the cost a import can do it at. You can talk your shit but you can't do shit for what an import can. Just think, Honda makes those F1 motors, 3L V8 with Turbos and heavily modified (soon to be a 2.8L) and at 4+ times the hp a mustang makes. Imagine what they would do to a 4cyl if they had to run one in a F1! I am willing to bet that Westons car would own your mustang on a SCCA track. I bet he'd let you pick the track too! No street car is designed as a race car... it would have been made with roll bars/cage, chutes, beefed up suspesion, etc. They are made as performance cars but not as a actual race car. Besides with all that bs emissions crap you lose a lot of hp/tq off just that. A performance car it tuned to give you the best power/tq with out completely sacrificing gas mileage and safety, I'm sure there's more but can't think now, and a race car doesn't give a shit about gas mileage and as for safety, think about it. If all you have to do is go straight do you really need a power steering pump?!!! How about A/C?, A small radiator? No, those all get removed and the radiator is moddified/swapped for a better one. For road courses talk to Weston on the car part, I can talk about the formula shit which is totally different.

Building a 10 second car out of any of those still isn't very cheap relative to the cost of the car though, but that isn't everyones goal. I didn't go look at corvette's, pull out my calculator, and figure "hey! I could buy 2 civics and make them fast for this price". I hope you see my point.... My car looks sexy, handles great, performs great, gives me creature comforts like navigation and heated leather. Best part is it has a full factory warranty. That's what I was looking for when I bought the car. From a price/performance standpoint there aren't many better deals out there.

That's probably the second best point made in this entire thread. I didn't go buy my AllTrac thinking "Gee, is this going to be the best band for my buck?" I bought the car because it's rare (1 of 81), the body was in pristene condition, reliable and factory turbo AWD, and had certain creature comforts as well (10-speaker stereo, electrically adjustable leather seats, automatic climate control). Because most Toyotas back then, and even now, came with a double-din CD/Cassette unit, that also provides me with a convenient space for a touchscreen LCD to run my in-car computer for GPS and on-the-fly tuning.

It just so happens that along with the package, comes pretty good aftermarket support that allows me to make the car as fast as I want without a tremendous amount of modification. Hell, how many 4-cylinder engines made back in the early 90s can support over 400hp on the stock shortblock?

But nothing comes without a price. The AllTrac drivetrain is fairly inefficient (I believe around 33% loss), and changing the clutch requires that you drop the entire engine and tranny out of the car. Separating them and mating them back together is no walk in the park either. The transfer case wraps around the engine from the driver's side, and it's extremely heavy and awkward. The bell housing and gearbox weigh 144lbs, and the T-case alone weighs 75.

I could of wasted my money on a 91 FOX Body with a 351 windsor swapped in it, 5 lug, AW Disk Break conversion with a tremec 6 speed and a vortec supercharger but then i got to thinkin about it. Wouldnt i be just like every other cocky mustang driving asshole??

By the way, on the road course my 240sx out performed and beat the clock agains a 95 superchaged cobra.... What does that say?

Anyways, take your cocky ass back to mustang land were you will blend in with all the other fags that put exhaust on their car and call it fast and cool cause its lound and obnoxious.
