I only use AMD in all of my systems.
I own an Intel... P4........... on a computer I NEVER use. :D
My laptop's running an Intel as well, but I can't complain, work provided it. :D

I'm about to get an AMD 64 laptop in the next day or two. It's like half the price of the comparable intel laptops I looked at.

And it'll outperform an equivalent Intel, too. :D
The ONLY thing I give Intel credit for, is the Centrino family of processors. For mobile business users, those things kick ass.

Have you seen the benchmarks over at Anandtech for the new Yonah processors from Intel? Based on the Pentium M, this will give AMD a run.. Power wise, it consumes LESS power at full load than an equivalent AMD Athlon64 proc at idle. But I'm sure AMD has something up their sleeves. Either way, i have neither in my machine since I have a Mac. But that will change soon and I will be going Intel because Macs will.

Wasn't the Turion the AMD equivalent of a mobile Celeron?

You should also give them credit for the Xeon line.

I prefer AMD 64bit CPUs at home but at work we got Itaniums exlusively and they are great.

yeah I agree I have had AMD's all the way to my current FX system and I will never own a Intel home computer... My laptop on the other hand has the 2.03ghz Pentium M Centrino... blah blah blah.... It is sick and only for the reason that the battery lasts about four hours and the thing is fast running Maya and 3D Studio Max. I like the Centrino, but am with everyone else AMD>all and yes that includes the Mac's

I agree... everyone says how stable they are, I was wondering if any of those people have ever ran 3D Studio Max, Maya or Lightwave on them... they crash pretty good after only about 10 minutes of use...

Macs would have been a lot more successful if they weren't perceived as a toy / video game machine at first, if Steve Jobs wasn't so hard-headed about not offering any expandability, and if they were priced competitively. The early days of Apple and Microsoft is a pretty interesting story. Macintoshes started out with far superior technology to the first PCs, but people just took IBM more seriously and found their prices and expandability more attractive. If Apple got all of those customers (and the revenue that came with them) instead, they would have been able to keep ahead of PC's (assuming that Jobs didn't screw it up) and we would all be using Macs today and making fun of PC's.

I agree. They dug themselves into a hole early on by their lack of compatibility. The pc took off because anyone could build one from parts that dozens of companies produced. It drove down prices and lead to the victory of the pc as we know it.

Shouldnt you say: I prefer AMD 64bit CPUs at home because I have zero 64bit programs, and all my 32bit apps take full advantage of my 64bit instructions..
j/k :p

I got my amd 64 bit laptop last week and love it. I actually do have some 64 bit apps and run windows xp 64bit on it (even runs 32 bit apps faster under the 64 bit environment.
Yesterday we built a new desktop machine for my business partner. It's a dual core 4200 amd 64 processor, 2gb of ram, 4 300gb sata raid drives. That thing is a monster. I'll probably build one for myself sometime next month.

How the fuck? Every modern processor will shut itself down before overheating and way before anything close to that happens.

I should be getting the part for my Dad's new computer tonight.
Dual AMD Opteron 246 (2.0ghz clock speed), 1 gig ram, sata and whatnot. Should be fast for a personal server of course I'll have to test it out with some games first :)

maybe before they had thermal protection, but all modern cpu's shut down before they get hot enough to melt.
