We wanted to bring some attention to a recent victory by a Cobalt SS Supercharged tuned by GM Performance Division
in the Toyo Tires Time Attack competition presented by Super Street and Eurotuner magazine. The race-prepped Cobalt SS
Supercharged used nitrous to develop 380 hp and 387 lb-ft. of torque. That prodigious amount of power was handled [...]

If that's the same car on some show I saw on SpeedTV, the motor was fully built, extensive headwork and valvetrain upgrades and the supercharger is much larger.

And it is still a Cavalier, ha jk bitches.

I have yet to run into one on the street, I'd like a race. I actually was next to one on an on-ramp but my wife doesn't allow exhibition of speed while she is the car.

I think you are thinking of that build competition, Street Tuner Shootout or some shit like that. BTW, you know some Hybrid people right? You know Merritt from the board was just on the new Import Tuners?

I saw the show too.. was pretty cool to watch.

Yeah, but every other car in the competition was fully built as well.

I got next to one at Sonic one night, he called me out not even knowing what I drove, so I followed him, we got next to each other, and he wouldn't even race me after I blew off next to him... lol. I DID race another one one night though, and it was balls slow.

I used to work at John Elway Chevy and I actually got to drive the first one in Colorado, even got to beat up on it.. I was laughing at the slowness when I got out. They have NO balls at all. I think a GSR with I/H/E would be able to run doors with them stock.

It still gets most of it's power from nitrous (only 283 HP and 243 torque without it; we could only hope that's at the wheels), and they rented that track out for three days to have Lotus do development work on the car. Not to mention that John Heinricy was driving.

Needless to say, it wasn't really true to the spirit of that competition... everyone else had cars that other people could build for themselves. The Cobalt team had the world's largest car company spend ridiculous amounts of money to design and build a one-off car and put a highly experienced professional driver behind the wheel.

Not true, this was in the UNLIMITED FF class.

first place in the Front Engine Front Drive (FF) Unlimited
Class.

I agree on the power comment though. A small displacement motor is no place for a supercharger.

I'm aware of the class, and I race in an even more unlimited class myself. I never said they did anything that broke the rules. I just said that it wasn't true to the spirit of this particular competition. It was a largely amature event, and the other "professional" teams there were still pretty small-time and promoting small-time sponsors (which really makes them amatures since they don't really race for a living). Some of the other cars may have been "built", but they certaintly weren't even close to this level, since no one else had anywhere near the resources that GM and Lotus do. It's kind of like hiring major league baseball players to join your softball team.

i think stock cobalts run mid 15's at bandimere.
there is a redline ion, same car as a cobalt, is running 14.6 with upgrades at bandimere.

They are decent stock, IMO... good competition for the RSX Type-S. The problem is that their potential when modified by the average enthusiest has yet to be impressive.

Hahaha, yeah, we've done plenty of photochops of Merritt.

Tam and katman tried to get with her. LOLOL.

IMO, stock, the are junk. I think Chevy could have done a lot better with this car. They really need to step it up if they want to compete with Mopar, Mitsu, etc.

I agree that it's pretty weak for a supercharged car trying to do well in the sport compact market, but stock for stock, it does beat the RSX Type-S, and Acura doesn't have any problem selling those. I think they are just trying to appeal to people who want a sporty new car but don't have a ton of money... it is just the new Cavalier afterall.

Yeah, they aren't trying to compete with the evo or sti market. They are in the civic, neon, etc market and hold their own there.

I pulled up behind one not long ago and he mashed it off the line, I hung pretty well with him, he slowly pulled not anything spectacular. If I was boosted it would have been a different story.

You can't compare apples to oranges though. You're comparing a supercharged "sports car" to naturally aspirated cars.. that's not a very good comparison.

Brian

Sure it is, they are in the same class and price range. Why would you compare it to cars in a different class completely?

Those things were going for around $23-25k at John Elway.. you mean to tell me that's not comparable to an Evo RS, SRT-4, WRX? I'm curious how they don't compare..?

MSPR on the supercharged SS is 22K. Cobalt's start at 14,500. It's pretty much civic territory, the Si being the competitor for the Supercharged SS.

I At one point it did register that it was a bad idea…..
have been looking at the Civic SI. It cost 19k; you can put a turbo in it and cost the same as the Cobalt SS.

One thing I noticed is that the driver of the evo it not that guy that they made the new MR. MR is the guy initials. They should have used the Evo 5 or 6 I hate the 7 it is a lot bigger and it is not anything like the WRC earlier Evos. Was this a race of all 2006 cars or something like that? I may be wrong on some specs and stuff so call me out on it.
One last thing, this is not normal for an American car to do have a good power to weigh ratio. The cobalt reminds me a lot if Suzuki. Am I the only one to notice this?

I'm not talking about a Cobalt LS. I'm talking about a Cobalt SS. If we wanted to compare the Cobalt LS to anything, compare it to the Subaru Impreza 2.5RS (starts at $18,295), or the Mitsubishi Lancer ES (starts at $14,599), etc.

Maybe John Elway just gives it to people in the ass...

cobalt ss is MSRP is $21,400 evo rs msrp is $28,679. Pretty big difference. The cobalt is closer in price to the civic and such. It is in range of the srt-4 so THAT is valid.

That's very well a possibility. I'm simply stating the price I saw on the sticker. At the time, it was also the first one in Colorado, so you know there was a nice pad on the price.

Brian

I was also quoted 42 for a new evo at the local dealer so lets not go off of local dealer prices.

So take the Evo RS off that list and replace the WRX with the WRX TR. The SRT-4 and WRX TR are both in that price range and are considerably better performing for the price.
