View Full Version : SPEEDING TICKET.
so. im in highlands ranch, heading down quebec toward university. i just picked my brother up from school, and were driving home.. around 2:45. so, im in the far right lane (3 lane road) and im going about 45mph in 5th gear. my lane opens up, for some reason everybody gets over to the left lane. weird. i notice a corvette in the far left lane speed by a couple of cars, no biggie. then all the sudden i see 2 cops cars chillin next to each other. first thig that goes through my mind is slow down. second is.. that corvette dudes screwed.. hes going at least 65. come up closer, maybe 200yards away and i see this officer run to his car and open the door. yup, hes goin after that fool. i pass them both, and look in my rear view. flips on his lights and i pull off to the side, slowing waaay down. watch him come up on me real fast, and wtf. pulls ME over. i have a police sponsor sticker on my rear window, and i know the procedure (both hands up on the steering wheel, windows down and license, insurance and registration set to go. the cops cool for the most part.. says he got me on the radar doing 59mph, in a 45. hmmMMm. i disagree. i point out that there was a corvette that passed them going well over the speed limit and they didnt deny it. they told me that they could only catch 1 at a time. so, i asked if he accidently got the corvette on the gun, thinking it was me. NOPE. the radar has some magical star trek laser beam that PINPOINTS my license plate and tracks me. weird.. i have a jap license plate i got off the internet.. no reflective stuff on it.. just a peice of metal.. hmm. so i end up taking the ticket, which is 4 points and a $75 dollar fine.
;NutKick;
can i fight this? i dont think i have anything.. but im positive i wasnt going over 50. thats for sure. i had my brother in the passanger seat, and he can vouch for how fast i was going as well. FUCK.

Metal is reflective to radar, as is your whole car. It's laser that they aim at the plate, but it'll still get you if it isn't very reflective.
What's important is if he got you with laser or radar... if it was laser (aka lidar), then it is something that is aimed at your car and only clocks you. If it was radar, then it's a wide beam that clocks everyone in the general direction that the gun is aimed, so you have a good shot at the Corvette defense. If that's the case, then it sounds like the officer isn't very well educated about radar. You said he admitted to there being a Corvette going faster, so use that. If he tries to say that the reading wasn't for the Corvette because he observed it going faster than 59, then ask him if he knows what the cosine error is. Radar only measures speed on a path directly to/from the gun, so he will only get an accurate reading if the radar gun is clocking the car head on... the more of an angle he's at, the less speed the gun will show. At a 90 degree angle (ie pointed at the side of your car), the gun will read 0 MPH no matter how fast you're going. This is also why cops always catch you going a little slower than you really were.
Be glad that's all it was. I got a ticket for the same speed and had to pay $470 since it was "4th offence" (bs.. the others were defective.. not speeding) and in Thornton.

Fight it.
the cop said it was a laser gun, and he pinpointed my plate. my plate is a peice of metal with paint over it.. its a japanese immitation plate i found on the internet.
i have a buddy who served as a officer in denver, and i also asked him about it. he told me that cops have a license for using lidar. BUT, they do expire, and if its not renewed, which most cops dont - the court will drop the case. he also asked me if i questioned the cop if his gun was properly calibrated.. which i didnt ask.
im most likley going to fight it, but if i lose - which i might. i belive the court costs are $300.
thanks for the support guys!

No, court cost isnt that high unless you hire a lawyer. When my speeding ticket got dropped to 0 pts, the court cost was $85.
hmmm ok. that sounds good, i might as well fight it.
weston - also.. my plate is painted white, with the numbers painted in black.

it doesn't matter if its reflective or not. I had a cop tell me once he could clock my car with laser, by bouncing it off my sunglases. ;NutKick;
yeah.. im starting to realize that i might just end up paying the fine. tihs is such bullshit. i dont know about the sunglasses thing. i thought the CO plates were updated to that refletive stuff, for the laser, cameras, and jus visabilty purposes? hmm.

Yup. They just aim for the front license plate because it's reflective and increases the chances of getting a reading at a higher distance, but they certainly don't need to use it.

Why is this in the troll archive?
i dont think they can give you a ticket for having a jap plate. ive seen alot of VWs, BMWs, etc with euro plates. as long as you have your rear plate with valid tags, you should be ok. thats a good question though, but i know it varys from state to state.
yeah... i think im just gonna end up playng the fine. this sucks
and where else would this topic be? i didnt really know.. SORRY.

CO requires that you have front and rear plates...
I've only been stopped once for not having front plates though...
seriously? ive never had a cop say anything to me about the plate. theyve looked at it funny, but never tried to dick me around or anything. thats intresting to know though - it might be a good idea to throw that bad boy colorado plate back on.
