View Full Version : Got to for a ride in a C5

And holy shit those things are fast! I was sitting at Valie's mom's house last night, hating life when they started talking about watching the continuation of Gone With the Wind, when Steve, a friend of her mom's, shows up in a 98 C5. Luckily he was a car nut so we got to talking and didn't have to watch the chick flick and eventually went for rides. We took the C5 out first and wow. I only thought my car was fast. There is nothing like V8 acceleration. Off the line that thing would snap your head back and press you into the seat, breaking the tires free on every shift. If you have $40 to $50K I highly recommend picking one up. Then we jumped in the Supra, which doesn't have mind numbing acceleration until about 3500 rpms but after that was enough to impress a american car loving V8 driver. Damn I can't wait to turn up the boost.

Thanks to Steve for saving my as from a boring ass movie.

Just wait - once you boost it, that C5 will feel like a honda accord... :)

Ya all can say what you want. That C5 was definitely faster than my car. Seemed to be put together pretty well too, considering it is a Chevy and all.

85,000 hard miles, 200 passes down the track and my GM car is just fine.

My goal at the strip this year is to be in front of the Z06s and not behind 'em.

Is that good funny or bad funny?

I should have about a half second on them at least this year hopefully more but I think my stock IC is gonna hamper seeing a 12 in the 1/4.

Cool,I generally get dogged on dsmtalk for saying that I can beat a Z06 with the much aligned 18g turbo.

What do the ZO6's run stock up here?

Generic

Z06's here can crack into the high 13's.

Regular Vett your talking 14.2 with a perfect driver.

Most people are mid 14's in vetts.

mid 13's stock, and I think they still have some faster times left in them.

A guy I heard about at sea level hit an 11 something in one with nothing else done besides a 2002 zo6 air box.....

Really -- it seems that I rarely see any stock C5, Z06 or otherwise break into the 13's. I've never seen a stock non-Z06 break 100 mph, and like someone said standard C5s run 14.2s with perfect driving. I've seen many run 14.5's or thereabouts.

I know that I've seen several Z06 passes at Bandi, but can't remember exactly what they run. Don't recall seeing any 13.5's though. Traps seemed to be in the 100 mph range.

This is all from memory, so I could be mistaken. At sea level, it would be another story entirely. NA cars loose about 18% of their hp at Bandi, which really hurts their 1/4 mile times. To my knowledge, C5s are high 12 to low 13 second cars ASL, on radials.

I hope it doesn't seem like I'm bashing the C5. I actually think it's an amazing car, and would love to own one. I'm just trying to state the times based on the runs I observed last season.

nope there were a few Z06's at bandi that ran 13's but the one black one that was there was only getting faster wtih miles. I think he may have ran a fastest of a 13.6......And I have seen other z06's run 13.8's no problem.

Well, as I stated, I really couldn't remember what the Z06s were running -- nonetheless I stand corrected.

Do you remember what kind of traps they were turning?

I still maintain that the average, reasonably well-driven C5 runs about 14.5 at 97-98 mph.

I ran against a automatic C5 and it turned a 14.5@101 but of course I won with a 14.1@94mph.

Yea, a few of the new 405HP Z06's are cracking off very high 11's at sea level, stock! That is nuts!

I sooooo wanna race a C5 on the street, just because I know I can put them down to about 70 or so, and I'd love to see the look on the drivers face.

Yeah that one guy we talked to for a while at a clubclash said his zo6 just kept getting faster with miles. His first night out he was hitting mid 14's, but within a couple weeks he was hitting 13.6's pretty consistently.

I can almost never get a c5 to race on the street though. I gave one a good pull through 1st and second, but then traffic stoped us from getting another good run.

Oh and Dave, I concur most regular c5's tend to run mid 14's here....

Thanks Brian. I was starting to think that I might be loosing my mind! ;)

Mid 14's is for a bone stock C5. With a few simple mods, I think they can run 13's quite easily -- but I thought we were talking about stock C5s. Obviously if the car is modified in any way, all bets are off.

I thought it was pretty impressive anyway.

I know it would take my car off of the line and I'm not sure I would even be able to catch it on the high side. My car must be slower than I thought. :hat:

I have lots of respect for vettes just because they are 1) beautiful cars and 2) pretty dang fast stock. So much respect that I won't even bother racing them, I'll just gawk at their car :) Hell, it's not like I'm driving a Lotus and will give them a run for their money :p

I've not seen a stock Z06 run under 14.0 @ Bandi, but then I don't really pay that much attention to the v8 guys at the track. :)

I don't remember the guys name off the top of my head, but I believe he races with corvette connection or one of those groups. He hit a bunch of 13.x's once he had a few hundred miles on it.

I was all happy at first when I saw that guy running 14.1s in that Z06 but then at the next club clash he was solidly in the 13.6-13.8 range.
