I heard about this from my friends parents. Keep in mind that I am the third person this has been passed down to. So the story goes like this: Delivery of 2006 C6 Corvette (silver hardtop). Has 3 miles on the car, it gets taken off of the delivery trick and blows the motor in the parking lot not more than 2 minutes from being started. It threw a rod out the side and bottom of the block/oil pan. Chevy flew in an engineer from Canada that day to look at the car and figure out what happened. Preliminary thoughts are that a retainer is missing. I went to the dealership last night when they were closed and took a few pictures through the windows. Today I went back and the service door was open. So, I walked in and nobody was there, not even Mr. Canada so I started taking a bunch of pics. They took off the front crossmember, dissasembled the suspension, yanked the motor and have it on a stand. Its a pretty damn big hole, I couldn't find any parts of the rod lying around or else I would have taken pics. Here are the pics I do have.

A missing retainer put a hole in the engine block? That's an interesting theory....

"missing retainer" is chevy terminology for "drunk at the assembly plant forgot to tighten the rod bolts"

Now I am not going to get pissed but I must say that I am insulted the Ryanman, captian of the S.S. Bullshit, is questioning my credibility. Of all people I thought fisherman were the ones we could trust. Anyways.

Here I am a little bit baffled about being called a liar.

Now, where is that motor?

Oh, there it is.

http://img387.imageshack.us/img387/1247/cimg08462ar.th.jpg (http://img387.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cimg08462ar.jpg)

Does it still have that pesky hole in it? I think so, let me point it out.

http://img387.imageshack.us/img387/2741/cimg08479ue.th.jpg (http://img387.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cimg08479ue.jpg)

Which motor comes in the new Vette? I think its a six liter.

http://img387.imageshack.us/img387/8077/cimg08569fd.th.jpg (http://img387.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cimg08569fd.jpg)

I am starting to get the hang of this. I think this thing goes up there.

http://img387.imageshack.us/img387/9957/cimg08672nu.th.jpg (http://img387.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cimg08672nu.jpg)

Is there room for it though? Maybe it fits in this big hole.

http://img387.imageshack.us/img387/675/cimg08627vp.th.jpg (http://img387.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cimg08627vp.jpg)

I bet you would have to take out some stuff to drop the motor. Like lets say the exhaust back to the mufflers and maybe the front crossmember. Yep, I was right.

So to ryanman and anyone else who doubts me here is a big Colorado Fuck You

http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/9371/cimg08593os.th.jpg (http://img69.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cimg08593os.jpg)

and again

http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/8915/cimg08605np.th.jpg (http://img69.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cimg08605np.jpg)

I talked to the person who did the inspection on the motor saying that it looks like there wasn't a retaining clip for the wrist pin. When the rotating assembly swung down the wrist pin slid sideways, when the motor turned to go back up the wrist pin hit the bottom of the sleeve and jammed causing the rod to break and put an extra oil exit hole in the motor.

Things like this happen a lot with new cars.

I've heard some OEM's have a 15-20% loss ratio on new vehicles. **

Most fuckups are caught at the factory. The ones you want to avoid are the ones that makes it to the market through wholesale auctions. I've seen a ton of "pristine" brand new cars at auctions. Ones that couldn't pass a QA inspection.

** loss ratio means vehicles that come off the assembly line with a problem. Some need repaints, some need an oilpan gasket, some throw rods through the block at mile #3. Usually the issues are minor, like ill fitting trim, inoperable electrical components, or dings/scratches/nicks in the paint.

OK, now you're making more sense. For future reference, please note that a retainer is a valvetrain component, and pin locks are what hold the wrist pin in.

Now that our terminology is straight, I'm surprised by two things:
1) The use of full-floating wrist pins in a factory engine that is not a Subaru. This is pretty rare, almost all are semi-floating pins without locks, meaning the pin is pressed into the rod and the piston 'floats' on it. A full-floating pin is not a press fit anywhere and requires pin locks.

2) That the wrist pin actually gets below the sleeve. That causes crazy amounts of piston skirt wear.

On those two facts, I am forced to conclude that either that tech is a rambling moron, and/or GM engineers are fucking retarded.

That's exactly why I raised the BSflag. I knew a missing retainer wouldn't do that much damage. If someone would've said a missing pin lock/lock ring/spiro lock/etc. then I would've never raised the BSflag.

Suck a cawk Maverick.

Like I already stated this is what the guy doing the inspection said "I talked to the person who did the inspection on the motor saying that it looks like there wasn't a retaining clip for the wrist pin." I wont argue terminology either because I didn't see anyway that a dropped valve would break a rod either.

yeah that's great, but it was scrutinzied because in the first post you said "Preliminary thoughts are that a retainer is missing." 8 posts later you cleared up what you meant.

I'm not arguing that what you're saying is what you heard from the tech, I'm saying that GM is a bunch of drunken fools :)

I thought with the z06 motors they dynod them after assembly to make sure its all working?
