I recently got my Dad's computer because he wanted me to do all the Windows updates for him. So I ran the Automatic Update program and got all the updates. While it was installing Windows XP SP2 the computer just shut off. After it shut off it wouldn't turn on for another 15-20 minutes. Now it will turn on but nothing happens. All the lights turn on the computer (i.e. Power light, keyboard lights) however there is no activity. The hard drive light flashes once but that's it, no BIOS, nothing. I am not sure if the screen lights up or not, but it seems like maybe there is a hardware failure. Any ideas. It's an HP zd7000 laptop.

Does he have added memory on it? Pull that out, reseat it and power it on again.

His computer is bone stock. I think it may be a mobo problem as well...... My warranty expired 13 days ago.

Try and hit the reset button - its on there hidden somewhere..(maybe) otherwise you can try and remove the battery - and hold down the power button for a while. Try and remove all the add-in devices and see if you can get it to post. HDD/optical drive/keyboard/leave 1 stick of ram...

SP2 hoses a LOT of stuff up, for many people...but I doubt it would just kill the system. I'd bet the hdd failed or something..
