Lately i've been getting lots of packet loss on my cable connection. I'm pretty much sick of it at this point. The phone techs just tell me to unplug the modem and restart the computer, I don't think they even know what packet loss is to be honest. Anyone have any suggestions in the colorado springs area? I'm off of powers near stetson hills. I've been thinking about dsl, but wanted some opinions.

Brian, my father recently moved from cable to DSL. He has been much happier since.

THanks Richard. Do you know who he uses? I'm guessing Qwest?

Even though the tech assured me it wasn't my modem, I decided to take it back today and swap it for a new one. Weird, now i'm getting 4megabits a second down. I should have known better when the tech didn't know what packet loss was.

Modem eh? Crazy. I don't know what packet loss is nor does my father, I'm sure, but his cable always seemed to be down in the area. The DSL has been much more reliable for him.

I may still switch out of spite. I don't like giving adelphia money.
How have you been anyway?

There is some mom and pops place that is doing T-1s to the house for 40 bucks a month... It was in the gazette.. Its not as fast as cable... but its dedicated... 1.5 up and down it says...

Please don't give money to Qwest.
I am begging you, please don't.
Anything but Qwest.
I'd donate to the Taliban before Qwest.

Hmmm, i'll have to find out who they are. A T1 would be reliable as hell if nothing else. I work from home now so steady speeds aree nice. I got so much more work done having the new modem today. Reminded me of how important it is.

qwest is not much better... i've had my issues with qwest and i would not recommend them... in fact i am looking to move because my apartment only goes throught qwest for high speed internet.

Really? Good to know before I make a switch. I'll have to see who else is providing dsl in the area.

I had a ticket (work order) open for over a month for my down DSL problem. I bought a new modem, to find out it wasn't the issue. 4 techs were sent out, one time they told me they would be at my place between 8-noon, the tech never showed up. It was a big headache...

I dont see how any other dsl provider would have a better line. Anybody who is not qwest offereing DSL still leases the lines from Qwest. All most all the lines throught the midwest are owned by qwest and are just leased.

True, but other companies may provide better support if that is the main issue.

I have HAD Qwest DSL.
You think the LVL 1 tech support for Adelphia sucks, lol wait till you have to wait 1.5 weeks for Qwest, so they can get a tech on a plane and to your location. All the DSL companys here use Qwest as a carrier, matter of fact I used New Edge Networks out of Washington (they used Qwest) had a 1.5Mb line, they came out and said nope we can only do 768/768 K next week DSL stopped working, they had to hire a local company to come out and look, he found out I had 2 lines, and somone else was on the other line, everytime they picked up the phone, cut my DSL (wired wrong). Qwest are the people ultimatly responsible for YOUR line, not the ISP (dont get fooled )
Anyway I have been using Comcast Cable Modem since 1996 in Vista CA when it was first announced and UO was just getting popular :-)
Comcast has been very good to me, super pings almost 1MB/s downloads all day.
They also had a few issues, when I moved to Pueblo..but in their defense they had a crew at my location the entire night fixing the problem.
The didnt leave untill my cable was up, they said a construction crew chopped there line and it burnt an Node/Amplifier.
The first guy to wire in my CM didnt do the cables right, so they fixed it.. I have not had any issues for over a year.

Well, after the modem swap my adelphia cable has been super fast, so i'll probably just stick it out with them since the Qwest reviews seem fairly negative.

When I had ATT/Comcast, I dont think I ever waited more than 5 minutes for support.
When I switched to Qwest (just because they were a little cheaper) I had to wait a week before my service worked. That was a week of calling them and being on the phone for hours waiting for someone to answer. Apparantly the tech was supposed to leave me activation info, but he told me that I was supposed to call in to activate.
Nobody had any clue what was going. The best support I ever got was to unplug my modem and plug it back it.

^^ So true
Welcome to level 1 tech support, they actualy hire people to tell you that. Hell, if they wre schooled and started asking you questions about Firewalls, Hardware boxes, switches and hubs, then they would'nt be level 1 tech support :-)
I always try to get to the top dog, I actually demand the top dog, the guy that knows Route Add and Masks, the guy that knows the ins and outs of appliance firewalls and RJ45 cable structures.
Somone who could actualy tell you, ya your line is down :)
Cable Modems like mine deliver up to 7 DHCP IP's, somtimes the entire internet stops working somthing to do with packets hosing up between the CM and the Linksys router. I just re-set the appliances.
