i was on 104th heading home, stopped at a light and in front of me is a green focus. rice wing, big sticker on the side (focusperformance i think) and NO FUC*ING muffler. well the light turns green and i can hear his dumb exhaust as he takes off. i look to the wife and tell her "i bet i could whoop him" (we were in our EXPLORER). next light turns red he gets over in the left lane, feeling frisky i get in the right lane. light turns green and we take off. i let off off at about 60-70mph AHEAD OF HIM:rofl: best of all my EXPORER did it quietly!!!!!

EXPLORER 1 focus 0

Nice try.First off,my car does have a muffler. It's located just before the rear subframe.Just cuz you can't see it doesn't mean it's not there.Second the "rice" spoiler is the 99 WRC wing produced by North Viking.Fully functional wing(yes,it makes a differewnce even on a fwd car).Second Einstein if it was a real race your butt wouldv'e been toast. You were two lanes over and I had no idea you wanted to race(next time get in the adjacent lane).Oh yeah, whats this ahead of crap.I've got to visit your world sometime.Maybe I'll see a pig fly as well. The sticker on the side was FOCUSSPORT,they are a performance manufacturer.

Unless this Focus is turbo'd, it's slow, even then, they aren't that fast, I have seen them run at Bandi, not trying to offend, just stating the facts. Sort of like saying that a stock civic Si is fast... they aren't. I am by no means the fastest out there, but if I lose I will admit. I know there will always be somebody out there with more money and a faster car.

Of course it sounds like I'm trying,I ripped out the stock shorty header for a 4-2-1 race header.Unless I barely touch the gas the car is loud.As for a turbo,no.Not yet. No,I'm not the fastest car out there.Never claimed to be.Slow?Compared to most of the modded cars here, yes I am.I did race at the club clash last year, and due to my lack of experience didn't do as well as I wanted. Also having the car in the shop most of the summer didn't help. Can't practice when your car is mia(no,shop ever does work on my car again!!!!!!!!!!).I went w/ a Focus, cuz everyone else goes either DSM or Honda/Acura.Nothing wrong with those, but I wanted to be different. These are not easy cars to get power out of w/o blowing everything to hell. The fuel system sucks, and currently there are no reliable aftermarket alternatives.I admit that the wing is not for everyone, but unlike the riceboys,I don't slap things on my car for no reason. They either have to reduce weight or add stability.Trust me,at 90mph on I-25 the car is glued to the road w/ the wing in the back. Before the car was jittery above 80.I actually do all my own installs(cams, gears,UDP,ignition, etc),and shortly will be performing a flywheel/clutch/Quaife LSD for a friend.

Don't think you are going to be too "different", sorry. Everyone and their sister is getting a Focus, since it's the new "phat car". In addition, with an anemic 130hp as your base power don't think you are going to be revered by the import community.
The Focus is just another grocery getting hatchback. It's a shame people pour tons of money into them to get them into the 14's.

I'm not concerned w/ being revered by the import community.Only an insecure person seeks acceptance from strangers.Hitting 14's is not why I bought the car.I Could care less what everyone and their sister purchases,I've had this car long before it became the new "phat car".As for 130 "anemic" hp?Whatever,my engine has been residing far north of that figure for quite some time. But please,if it satiates your ego go ahead and fire away.I'm not losing any sleep.

Ok so I really don't get this. I know I've been away for a while, but I remember HAI being welcome to everyone, weather they have a civic, focus, mustang, camaro etc. I used to own a focus, but do to poor quality control on (my vehicle in particular), I opted to get rid of it. However it was still a fun car. It had torque from the factory that a civic can only dream about, and was a blast to drive up through the mountains. I wasn't there to witness this race, so I'm gonna stay out of that portion, but I don't see what the big deal is about somebody taking pride and putting money into a focus. I did, and managed to cut more than 2 seconds off my stock 1/4 mile time without spending a godawfull amount of money. I guess the whole "brotherhood of speed" deal that kept everyone getting along no matter what they drove is gone from when I posted often. Just my .02 on the subject.

hp figures & track times-"anemic" of course.
I don't expect everyone to like what I drive or how I modify it.However, labeling it "rice" is a bit extreme.Call it crap, garbage, say you hate it.But to stoop so low as to include me with the jackasses that put a TYPE R on a DX,cut their springs, put assinine psuedo racing strips and Japanese lettering all over their cars(I've seen a growing number of Latinos doing this lately, why?).Let's not forget the growing number of nimrods adorning their vehicles w/ apc logos.I really do have an APC product on my car but refuse to put that logo on my car.The wing may not be to your liking, but it is functional.Don't like the car?Fine,I'm not going to try to change your mind or say your wrong.I'd just prefer you choose different words to describe it.Whether you do or not is up to you.The topic is closed as far as I'm concerned.

Focusguy, HAI has always been and still welcomes anyone to the board. We have a bunch of regulars that are domestic drivers and we never say we hate them or they are not welcome here. But afterall this is the "kill stories" forum and this is the kind of stuff that goes on in any fourm similar to this anywhere. take a look at Clubsi, honda-tech, even the ls6 forums. Like was said earlier everyone is entitled to an opinion and if I were you or anyone I would not take what is said here too seriously. If you ever meet up with us at the track or an event of any kind you will see that we are all really cool people that share a common interest.

I certainly didn't buy my Focus for speed...although it's one of the better autocrossing cars out there, (stock, that is).

These days, SUVs beat up on faster compacts than the Focus daily, so hearing about an Exploder beating a Fucus really wouldn't be considered Earth-shattering news.

smedly...have you gotten any 1/4 mile times with yout drag radials on the lighter wheels (I kinda rember you saying you purchased some DR's). have you gone with a bigger shot of nitrous, or are you still running what you have always run?

as said by the bandimere speedway anouncer..."15.325, that's a hell of an ET for a focus!"

I'd love to see a focus break into the 14's up here. I tried but in the end wound up running a bit too much boost and ran lean on what would have otherwise been near a 14 second run. Good thing I had mad amounts of octane that day so she didn't detonate (surprisingly).

anyhow I've got intake, and hopefully some nitrous on the way for the celica...we'll see what kinda times she'll be able to pull :D

as far as the taking to heart bit, that must have been totally my bad. it just seemed like a flame war was starting...my bad :smashfrea

I have to agree that when this site first started, it was a good way to unite all aspects of the import world. I was quite proud to have an affiliation with a club that accepted any kind of car, and respected everyone with the love and will to modify.
Although everything seems so friendly on these boards, I have to admit that the reason that I left this site was because when I actually saw anyone from this crew at Bandimere or at the autocross track, I was treated like an outsider. I went to every event HAI did through the first few months of the racing season, and I was very upset by how arrogant members of this board were. My car may not have been quick, or maybe it's just not a Honda, but the way some of the repected members of this board treated others was very disrespectful.

Smedly, I have a lot of respect for you and what you are doing. I'm very happy that you are defending what you believe in so well. I'm in an identical situation as you and I'm glad that there are others out there with the same problems/interests.

Anyway, I have to go to law class now. I hope noone is too offended. Brian, I want you to know that although I don't agree with the actions of many people on this board, I think that you are a very respectful person, and it would be great if everyone on the board had the same attitude as you. Since I'm about the onlyu member who both autoxs and drag reaces, I'm sure that somewhere in there you're reffering (at least in part) to me.

Don't take it personal, it's not that I'm arrogant (OK a little;)), it's mainly that I'm just a little stand offish until I get to know you. Here on the internet, it's real easy to be open and freindly. In person though it's a little different.

Steve, Brian and I didn't start off on the right foot either. We actually met in a flame war on ClubSi, against each other. Now there's not too many people in the import crowd that I have more respect for.

So, if anything I did made you feel that way I apologize. Whether or not you come back to the club is your business, but I hope you do.

Excuse me, but a wing on an FWD car is functional? Please explain. Thanks.

focusguy2000
03-06-2002, 05:10 PM
a car is a giant wing...or airfoil whatever you wish to call it. simple fact is, a car has a rounded top half, and is flat on the bottom. this creates lift due to high and low pressure differences. now you'd have to be going pretty fast for a focus, or any car for that matter to create enough lift to actually loose itself (like the clk gtr that decided it wanted to fly more than drive). however I can vouch for Ed in saying that at about 85+mph the focus starts to get a little squirelly. It is easily managable, but still can't be overlooked. Where a downforce creating wing on a rwd keeps the rear end planted so your tires have more grip, it does the same thing on a fwd car only it has nothing to to with traction based grip, but everything to do with stability at speed.

john
03-06-2002, 05:38 PM
Thanks! So, it helps in making up for bad windtunnel characteristics? I've NEVER heard of an aftermarket wing helping anything on an FWD car (besides the obvious rice factor).

Is there real data to back this up or is it urban legend?

newt2
03-06-2002, 05:44 PM
Although there is data to back it up, I'd be hard pressed to find it. If you look at BTCC cars though, they all run a wing and most are FWD. The Meguires Ford Focus runs 8s and it has the riciest looking wing you ever saw. As we all know, a race car doesn't run anything it doesn't need so they have to be doing something.

Any car can get airflow underneath it and create lift. For most cars we're talking speeds in excess of 100mph, but it does happen.

This has gotten entirely too long. This thread is the first topic I've responded to on this site since July.no reason in particular, just that I had more in common w/ the Focus site(obviously).I came back for one simple reason.I signed up to run w/ you guys at last years Club Clash. It was my first time and my times sucked(high 18's my first time).I was nervous, and kept my heavy ass Enkei's on.Due to a screw up on the install of my nitrous my car missed all but two of the events all season(my last time was a mid 16 w/ the tank going empty 3/4 of the way down the track). So after having the nitrous on for a while and throwing cams and ignition I was looking forward to this years Club Clash.Unfortunatley, the other Focus owners either can't or don't want to run in Club Clash,so I came here to see if HAI was running again.I figured that w/ the work I put into the car,and me being more used to the added power I would feel more comfortablearound you guys(that's why you guys who were at the two events I was at wouldn't remember me.My car couldn't hold a candle to any of yours and I was a little hesitant to stop by).Since I haven't been here a while I decided to browse and see what's doing before checking to see if you guys were running.I saw this thread and responded. For the record,I try to avoid street racing for the simple reason I drive for RTD and absolutley MUST keep my license clean.Trust me all it takes is one 60mph in a 30 zone to convince you(well it did me).I'd just rather do it at a track. Its safer, and in the entrance fee is a hell of alot cheaper than John Law.I do lapse occasionally, but I really don't want to risk my license,it's my livelyhood.

Very well stated. I certainly hope that there are no hard feelings. I talked to you a few times at the races and I would love to have you join us again in the future. Every member we have race on the team is important in my book. I could care less if someones car runs 25's or 4's they are all more than welcome. The first year steve and I raced in at bandimere he was in an automatic 2.0liter probe that ran 19's. I was running a GTI 2.0 liter that ran 18's most of the time. I think we beat up on more people at those events than we do now with our cars faster. Besides that it's just a fun place to hang out and bs about cars with the guys :D

I was by far the slowest of the group last year. I didnt expect to be fast with a 87 jetta, but it was still good to get more experience and was cool to hang out with everyone. Im am looking foward to this year, it should be even more fun. (and I wont be the slowest anymore....hopefully)
