Hi, I'm just new to the club and recently picked up a 92 prelude s. This car needs major help. the engine is crap and I'm in desperate need of a new one. What I'm wondering is: where can I pick a good engine at a decent price? Now, what I mean by decent is not necessarily one that will break my bank but one at least worthy of some mods. I need speicifics here, cuz I'm not really a car guy, but I'm learning. What I need is clear info on the engine make and model, as well as anything i might need to swap it.
If I can score some good deals here and some great advice, I hope to be seeing some of you at Bandimere!
Also i suppose im looking for a turbo kit or super charger.
What should be my first acquisition here guys? Then what comes second, third, ect ect.
anyhelp would be great
thanks

Well lets see stock motor is a f22, I really wouldnt see a point in that again. Im not sure about motor mounts, but probably the closest is the H22, you can get one for about 3 grand complete usually. Thats probably your best bet, unless you just want to fix the f22 up. www.jdmhondaparts.com would be one place you could look.

You could swap the head for one off of a prelude Si, that would give you a little power. If you want a whole new motor, look into an H23 or an H22, they both came in preludes. You can pick up an H22 for about $1200 or so. Good luck.

Hi,Mike. Welcome to the site.
I'm sure you'll find some good advice here.
He needs a whole new motor, his is a SOHC. I think he should swap in a VTEC Prelude engine.

ok a vtec h23 is what im going to look for, now im looking on ebay and other sites and they all say that they come with "swap kits" what exactly should i be looking for in these kits as so far no 2 have been the same.

would this be what im looking for?
is this a good price? $4500?
You are bidding on a Honda H22A Turbo Charger 420 HP VTEC Civic. It has 14,000 miles on it. This engine's modifications total to $8,600! The engine reach on dyno = 430 - 450bhp. It has 14,000KM before turbo, now 32,000KM with turbo. It has a big custom made intercooler (as big as skyline's supra's ATT).

Ok you said vtec h23 thats probably the rarest motor you will see for a honda, other than maybe a nsx motor. But if thats what you really want jdmhondaparts.com is selling one for $3500.
As far as a turbo h22 unless you know how to tune it pretty well, i dont know if you want to buy one someone else did.unless your pretty sure they know what they are doing and the motor is built for it.

If I was you I'd find a basic engine, with no mods on it, and if/when you want/can afford the mods, go all out ,do it right, and not worry about a previous owner screwing the engine up.

What Tsunami said reminded me of something i meant to say, A stock motor is most likely a better bet, if its modded a lot its more likely that the person was hard on the motor so it wont last as long

well ok then, i guess im looking for an un-mod h22!
noww tell me a bit about the h23, why is it so rare and why is it so expensive? why is it better?
would it be worth it?
will it fit ok in my car?

another question: other than the H22a, what other engines can i put in there? what about civic si engines?

Well the h23 isnt rare, im just saying the only jdm one you will find is really rare, usdm is really the only way to get one. Only reason i would consider it better is because of the larger displacement, it gets its torque much lower in the rpm range.
It will fit, it comes stock in the 92-96 Prelude Si but motor mounts will be more of a problem, a h22 would be a more direct swap from an f22

Actually the H23 is NOT a vtec motor, It does however use the exact same mounts as an H22 would use. Both of these engines will be a direct bolt in and will bolt up to the tranny and everything. You can take an H22 vtec head and put it on an H23 block to make your own H23 vtec. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Don't even think about, now you're talking about apples and oranges. Totally different tranny, engine, shift style, etc. Stick with either a new F series or upgrade to an H series.
