COUNCIL ISSUES PLAN FOR CURBING STREET RACERS
City Puts Forth Proposal For Increased Racing Penalties
by Jennifer Fullerton, Jemal Duran

COLORADO SPRINGS POLICE AND CITY COUNCIL ARE HOPING TO DROP THE RED FLAG ON ILLEGAL STREET RACERS, AND THE FLAG THEY'RE WAVING IS PRIMARILY HARSHER PENALTIES.

ON MONDAY, THE COLORADO SPRINGS POLICE RECOMMENDED BIGGER FINES AND EVEN JAIL TIME FOR VIOLATORS.

ACCORDING TO COLORADO SPRINGS POLICE CHIEF LUIS VELEZ, THE POPULARITY OF STREET RACING HAS GROWN UNABATED OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS, AS HAVE THE NUMBER OF RACE RELATED FATALITIES, "From 2002 to 2004 there were 17 fatality accidents related directly to street racing or exhibition driving."

NOW TRAFFIC COPS ARE WORKING EVEN HARDER TO CURB THE PROBLEM.

THEY WANT TO INCREASE THE FINE FOR RACING BY $150.00, AND TACK ON A POSSIBLE 10 DAY JAIL SENTENCE.

THEY ALSO WANT TO INCREASE FINES FOR REPEATED NOISE VIOLATIONS, AND SOME ARE GOING SO FAR AS TO SUGGEST THAT THEY SHOULD JUST TAKE AWAY THE KEYS.

AT THIS POINT IMPOUNDING A CAR CONFLICTS WITH THE STATE CONSTITUTION, BUT THE CITY COUNCIL IS DRAFTING A NEW LAW FOR THE LEGISLATURE TO CONSIDER IN JANUARY.

OTHER CITIES, WHICH HAVE ELIMINATED THE STREET RACING PROBLEM, SAY YOU SHOULD GIVE RACERS MORE OPTIONS.

LEGALIZED RACEWAYS IN BOTH DENVER AND PUEBLO SEEM TO HAVE IMPROVED THE SITUATIONS THERE.

CURRENTLY, THERE IS A PRIVATE EFFORT UNDERWAY TO BUILD A TRACK IN THE ELLICOTT AREA.

FOR NOW THE MAJORITY OF VIOLATIONS ARE SEEN ON POWERS AND ACADEMY BOULEVARDS, AND POLICE ARE OPTIMISTIC BIGGER PENALTIES WILL HELP.

Not year round but here is a small list, Bandi, PMI, PPIR, World Area hold AutoX, Second Creek, Etc... Plenty of places to go race.

dude, if they want to curb street racing, they should put stagging lights in place of stop lights. you'll see so many ricers and wanna be racers stall their cars, bog or break.

And 90% of the kids don't want to drive to and pay or know about those places.

What if you just have a 'fun run' on the highway with another car and u get busted by a cop as 'street racing'. Jail time for that is a little over the top IMO. I can see jail time for going to an organized street racing event or something like that which does really ask for it, but your gonna get people caught up as well that might just be normal law abiding citizens just having a little fun, and not to mention they could get jacked up in jail or come out screwed up. Hmmm, i say they need to have a definition between different types of 'street racing'.

I'm the type of person that will have a fun run here and there with another car, but not someone that goes out and actively street races or any of that crap. But if they really wanna attract the kids that go street race and that crap.. they need to make it cheaper for them to be in a safer environment. But it's gonna be an uphill battle unless they make those spots 'free'.

They used to have stop lights in the springs that counted down. They went 3, 2, 1, green. My dad said they were great for drag racing downtown (probably why they no longer have them).

It would probably also help if colorado springs had a track. Bandi is a long drive (I know, we used to go weekly), and pueblo......well, it's pueblo.

What about the cops themselves? I've seen many of them having their own spirited runs on numerous occassions!

Sometimes (you've seen it too) they'll drop cherries so they don't have to wait through a traffic light too! Then continue on... completely ignoring the speed limits!

Street riceing is a thrill they did it way back when they started making cars fast during proabition. It is a thrill not that the track it to far or not open there will always be people doing it.

Street racing goes back to the late 40's early 50's and then on... it has a long history that honda corp just trashed. <---- that was a joke..

sorry honda owners... its not like you all do it, but from my house to work I seen 3 lowered street ricers, ands that under 1 mile. And the other night on my BF2 Ranked server I seen a guy named , dont laugh..haha get this...

Oh and from my pov I can drive my jeep all day long with NO front plate, but yet I get in the Z and I get stopped all the time for no front plate, cops only pull over those they see fit, no one said a cop was smart, had any clue, or abide by the term of the law enforcment them selfs.

People say they street race for the thrill. Honestly, what kind of thrill with cars can you not get racing at the track. If they don't like the track, then go skydiving or something. However all these laws won't keep me from a little light to light run here and there.
