ICE - In Case of Emergency
A campaign encouraging people to enter an emergency contact number in their mobile phone's memory under the heading "ICE" (i.e. In Case of Emergency), has rapidly spread throughout the world as a particular consequence of last week's terrorist attacks in London.
Originally established as a nation-wide campaign in the UK, ICE allows paramedics or police to be able to contact a designated relative / next-of-kin in an emergency situation.
The idea is the brainchild of East Anglian Ambulance Service paramedic Bob Brotchie and was launched in May this year.
Bob, 41, who has been a paramedic for 13 years, said: "I was reflecting on some of the calls I've attended at the roadside where I had to look through the mobile phone contacts struggling for information on a shocked or injured person.
Almost everyone carries a mobile phone now, and with ICE we'd know immediately who to contact and what number to ring. The person may even know of their medical history."
By adopting the ICE advice, your mobile will help the rescue services quickly contact a friend or relative - which could be vital in a life or death situation. It only takes a few seconds to do, and it could easily help save your life. Why not put ICE in your phone now? Simply select a new contact in your phone book, enter the word 'ICE' and the number of the person you wish to be contacted.

That is what I thought but I put the ICE in my phone anyway.

It's simply to eliminate the need for them to waste time trying to figure out who they should call. Not everyone has "Mom" or "Dad" in their phone, so who do they look for next? That's really the point.

Good idea, and good post.

Too bad this won't work in Hawaii cause Dog the Bounty Hunter and all the cops will think it is their meth dealer.

It is a good idea though.

I'm going to put 911 under mine. That will be funny for them. They'll know I'm a funny guy even when I can't talk.

I just saw his show a few days ago, I think he was up in Denver. It was pretty funny, he's like the distilled essence of white trash. And when some overweight punk dropped him, he had to have his buddies get the guy off of him. Then he bitched and whined that the guy hit him with a crack pipe. You'd think he'd get a bit of hand-to-hand training if he's going to go around grabbing bad guys for a living.

That guy is from Denver. My mom used to have him insured or something. She said that lady who is his boss is a real fucking bitch.

I am a paramedic and have worked on an ambulance or in an ED for 5-6 years. The idea of ICE good one because there are times when it is nice to have some history or information about a patient that is unable to talk or is unconcious. However, scrolling through a cell phone @ 3am, attempting to talk to someone's panic-stricken Mother or loved-one is not on my list of things to do. If you are that sick (or that injured), I already have my hands full. Paramedics I know usuallly do a quick check of pockets, purses, or cars/bathrooms in instances like these and try to get what info we can in less than 1-2 minutes. My suggestion for those inclined has always been to type your name, DOB, and medical problems or medications on a small piece of paper and place it in your wallet. This will be found and used way before I think of touching your cell phone. Which if I find, I usually turn off.

i remember when we were at my apartment swimming, found a phone, decided to take naked pictures with it, but ended up finding pics already on the camera, so we sent them out to almost everyone on the phone book... including mom. ROFL

Conversations that go, Mamm are you related to Jimmy? Do you know why he is in the alley behind the shelter? How much cocaine does he do an average Tuesday? It is normal for him to carry a bingo marker... in his rectum? usually get you nowhere except in your supervisors office. Sad, but sometimes worth it.
