Why do i try?

I was driving my car and it over heated real bad about 6 months ago. It has not worked since. I have a friend look at the car and he thought that that I need a new battery and new starter to get it working. I have replaced those as well as the anion wire but it still does not run. The Fly wheel spins and when I pushed started it sound real low like a diesels engine. It did not fire at all but I think that the engine block is good; I just need some more electric stuff. Does anyone know any thing that I need to do?
