I might post up some pictures later, but I got rear-ended today. The rear bumper is pushed in, but not only that, when I open the trunk (which is somewhat easy), I look in and see a mountain where there used to be flat. Closing the trunk is incredibly difficult. Hedge your bets on whether it's totaled or not.
2000 Honda Civic EX Coupe 5spd, 62500 miles.

I was thinking about getting a 2005 Acura TSX anyways, this just makes me want it more.

I think it will be. Good luck, TSXs are sexy.

it could be totalled if this will make it impossible to adjust alignment on the rear suspension. so they would have to change tonns of parts, which could total it.

edit: one thing i can't quite make out though - how did you manage to have such low mileage? :)

I like to drive my car, but not that much. Actually for about 2 years I only worked 4 miles away from work one way. Then I worked 8 miles away. Now I work about 16 miles away. Alignment so far does not appear to be affected. If it makes any difference, I did hit the guy in front of me after I was rear-ended, but his damage was non-existant, and I have a few scrapes and scratches on my front bumper, but nothing really serious.

I prefer the TSX, partially because of gas mileage which really isn't all that much better, but also because I think the trannies in the TL are the same that are in the older V6 accords/pilots/mdx's that have had some problems. I could be wrong. I just like the look of the TSX's more.

A late model 3 series BMW isn't entirely out of the question either.

the tranny issue was mainly a late 1999 - early/mid 2002 production cars. However honda has addressed the problem and extended the warrenty on the years affected to 100k miles.

yeah, i agree with the part that look of the car does make all the difference, cause TL and TSX are essentially the same car - good ol' accord! i'm vague on the 6th gen tranny problems though.

as for totalling the car - front bumper scratches may add $500 to your settlement bottom line, but if no major suspension parts are going to be replaced, i wouldn't be too sure to bet that it will be totalled... i think you will need to get 5-6 grand in damage to get it totalled. just trying to base my calculations on my friend's 95 accord that i totalled.

it's hard to say how much damage there really is from just your description, but if the floorpan of the trunk is badly damaged he must have hit you pretty hard, were the quarters damaged at all?

That sucks. I'm going to court tomorrow for the ass that rear ended me. Mine wasn't near that bad, bumper just sticks out a tiny bit on the left, and I buffed out the scratches. Main thing is, are you ok?

from the pictures it looks like the crumple zones in the fraimrails worked for the most part.

I don't see any reason that couldn't be fixed from the pictures, and since your car is relatively new and still worth a fair amount, it's quite possible they will want to. I would guess that it probably wont be totaled. But with cars its hard to say, replacing some parts on cars is incredibly expensive, not to mention body shops are a ripoff to begin with.

wild.irish

very close call, it may be totalled and it maybe not. definitely there is damage in the range of 4-5 grand. cause left rear fender has waves deep towards the center of the car. this whole thing will be calculated as "need to be replaced", trunk, bumper, trunk floor, fuel tank pipes and all the paint... well, depending on how they would estimate car's market value..

good luck anyway! and make sure you have doctors check your neck!

did you jump out of your car beavis & butt head style, grabbing your crotch screaming " my liver, my liver, eh he he"?

there's a good amount of work needed i think they will total it for that

Don't know why I didn't notice this earlier, but I found out today driving home that the alignment is off a bit. I kindof thought it might be when I took a corner that I normally take at 70 at around 55ish today on the way to work and the car was getting a bit squirly. On the way home I put both hands on the wheel and noticed that if you were to draw a line from the center of the steering wheel up, it would approximately be half way between 12:00 and 1:00 o'clock. I don't think it's real bad, but I'm still not sure how exactly it happened that it's off.

Neck hurt more today than yesterday. It's annoying but not debilitating or extremely painful, but that may change over the next day or two. Wish I had time to go to the doctor today but my job is more important than my health, if that says anything about my working character (dedicated, think about others before myself). I'd go tomorrow if the satellite guys come and go early.

i had the exact same thing happen the other damage in the same places waiting for the other insurance companies to get it together

Well MY insurance adjuster came out today and said it was $4000 +. I called her insurance company and hopefully they will have one of their adjusters come out as well. So hopefully by the end of the week I'll have two different estimates. It was quite funny when I called her and told her the dollar amount that she wanted to pay "out of pocket", I could hear her jaw drop on the other end of the line. Her retort was that I should get another, probably lower estimate through some friends of hers that do body work. Right, like I'm going to trust a shop I don't know anything about whom are friends of hers to work on MY car... don't think so, sorry, try again.

What sucks is the whole trunk floor pan will most likely have to be cut out and a new one welded back in. What really sucks is that they'll probably want to do the same thing for the rear quarter-panel sheet-metal that now has some waves in it. This is so going to lower the resale value of the car, isn't it?

Any idea if the parts of the car will outweigh the whole of what the car is worth right now? Cause if that's the case I could probably just take the check from Insurance, and start parting the car out piece by piece.

Oh, oh, I just read all the posts and somehow forgot to mention the best parts of it all.
1) She had no insurance, it was cancelled before the accident occurred.
2) She was driving on an ID card since her license was taken away (I found this out when I went to the police station to file an official accident report).
3) Since she had no insurance, I'm paying my deductible to get my car repaired, and my insurance company is going after her in court + my deductible - rental car costs.
4) Damage is up to $6300. Car is worth 9K to 10K. They've had the car since the August 12th and still haven't put it on the rack to pull it apart since they've been adjusting their costs upward and ordering parts which haven't all come in yet. Estimated completion is still 2 weeks out.
5) I'm so tired of driving around this shitbox kia rio around that I'm thinking of doing something drastic. If someone hit me in this car, I'm sure I'd be close to dead. At $18.99/day it's totally not fucking worth it, especially when I'm gonna have the fuckin' thing for like almost a month.

Thus, I'm seriously just thinking about saying fuckit and going to buy a new car.
Requirments:
1) HIDs
2) Navi system
3) Leather
4) Heated seats
5) Less than $35,000.00
6) Has to be good looking
7) 20+ MPG city
8) Excellent resale value
9) Traction control at a minimum
optionals:
1) AWD
2) turbo
3) speed is not so much a factor as "fun to drive"
Thus, I've pretty much narrowed it down to the following cars (* indicates top contenders):
*Acura TSX
Acura TL
*2006 Honda Civic SI
Infinity G35 Sedan
BMW 330i
Subaru Legacy GT sedan
Audi A4
Chrysler 300C Hemi
*MazdaSpeed 6
Mercedes C class

Now the Dilema:
I can get the 06 Civic SI in 3-4 weeks, but the interior is, well, very strange
I can probably get the mazdaspeed 6 in 2-16 weeks.
I can go buy an 05 TSX right now, and believe me, I've seriously considered it, but considering the following upgrades on the 06, available mid-november, its quite possibly worth the wait:

Get the Mazdaspeed 6. That should be ultra-fun plus pretty practical. I'm seriously thinking about buying one in a couple of years, but I don't like the 3500 lb curb weight. But still, great looks, AWD, turbo, nice appointments and Mazda does a good job of managing ride and handling. That's my choice.

The mazdaspeed 6 would be cool, but I would go with the Legacy GT. I'm thinking about trading my TL in for one down the road...

Seeing how "slow" my TL is at times, I can't even imagine how other underpowered and/or N/A cars might feel. HID & Navi can always be retrofitted at a reasonable cost...

Well the total damages came out to be just under 6900. And they just got done with the car last week... I kept having to take it back and have them redo things that they fucked up on... like they put a scratch on a brand new painted rear bumper... fix it! The forgot a side tail-lamp... Fix it! The best part was the sound pads in the trunk, they only replaced on side of them, so I said replace the other side too, and they said it would cost more for me out of pocket. I called my insurance agent and he said he will cover it, so I told the body shop to do it... they did, but they replaced the ones they had replaced before WTF? I looked at him like he was a fucking idiot and said no, the other side. So they finally got it right. I took the car in in August, got it back in November, with about 3 weeks inbetween of being able to drive it. Don't ever take your cars to Abra Autobody, they SUCK!!!!

Oh god man. You should have asked me about a body shop. Abra is the WORST shop in CO. They have screwed so many people and insurance companies its not even funny.

I'm surprised your insurance didn't make you take it to a shop owned by a dealership or a nicer privatly owned shop. They won't even cover my if I wanted to go to Macco or Abra or Shibes!! I have to go to Red Nolan or some other up scale shop. I guess it's good, never had to go back to have them re fix anything. Glad to see you got your car back. Are you still going to get a new car though?

Hey Import something, if you are going to pay about 16k or more you can get it from japan for a littel less, I looked this stuff up, If you import it, then it must be parts. Have them pull the engine and put it in a diffrent crate. Or just ship it to canada and drive it here. check http://www.kandktrading.com/NewStockList1.htm , just search it. Real good deals but in japan. They have some rare ones too like Silivas, FTO andLoadsters.

I don't think they screwed me, I just kept taking back until they fixed it right. You're completely right, I should have asked you Tobi, and actually thought about it after the fact, but I bother you with enough honda problems, heh. Anyways, my father-in-law took his car there twice and didn't have any problems, and my wife took her car there once and didn't have any problems either, and since they were close by, I figured I would give them a try. Now I do nothing but talk shit about them to everyone I know. Fuck that place!
