i have an older machine running Miserable Experiance (ME) and am looking at a newer system with XP... Will I have problems networking these machines and sharing files? I did some research, but couldn't really find the info I'm seeking...

Thanks for the help!

You shouldn't have any problems, as long as your workgroups are the same and you have file sharing enabled... but this IS Windows you're talking about.

Try to network the two, and let us know what happens.

Should work without a hitch, but there are always some unexpected bugs when dealing with windows networking especially with something like ME.

I never bothered w/ ME, but I think ME may default to using NetBIOS via it's raw protocol and not over TCP/IP. In which case, XP is NetBIOS over TCP/IP. So if you try to browse to the windows xp machine share by name and you don't see your XP machine on the ME network, then try enabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

ME is the worst Windows OS ever released my Microsoft... Windows 3.1 works better in some aspects. :)

ME uses NetBios protocol and XP does not use NetBios. XP uses an advanced version of IPX/SPX that includes a NetBios compatible.

On your Windows ME machine, in the Network properties be sure to install TCP/IP and NetBios for your NIC. Install Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Print Sharing. If you have TCP/IP install in the Network properties be sure you are not binding with file sharing. Check the Network properties for your TCP/IP > NIC and the Binding tab, uncheck File and Print Sharing, leave Client for Microsoft Networks checked. On the NetBios >NIC Binding check both.

On your XP machine open the Network Connections, select your NIC and then in the Network Tasks select "Setup a home or office network" and complete the process with the Wizard. Install the network wizard to the Windows ME machine. The wizard will install a few new files and a new service to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\curr entversion\runservices key, "SSDPSRV" - Ssdpsrv.exe, which is "Simple Service Discovery Protocol Service".
