Well the time has finally come for me to pick up my new computer an I need some advise from those who are a bit more advandced in this area than I.

I looks like for the same price that I can get a:
Intel Pentium 4 w/ HT Technology - 3.4GHz Processor (3.4GHz, 1MB, 800MHz FSB, Socket 775)
I can also get a:
Intel Pentium 4 640 w/ HT Technology - 3.2GHz Processor (3.2GHz, 2MB, 800MHz FSB, Socket 775)
Or a:
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Processor (2.2GHz, 512KB, 2000MHz FSB, Socket 939 )
Or a:
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ Processor (2.4GHz, 1MB, 800MHz FSB, Socket 754 )

To be honest with you all... I am a bit of an AMD guy... And to me, I like the AMD3500 because of the large FSB and lowest price by about 8 dollars or so ;) But is there going to be a huge downside to have such a small Cache?

Anywayz, please let me know your opinions. Thanks in advance.

Um... if it was ME, I'd go with one of AMD's X2 processors with the 1MB L1 cache if you can afford it. Anandtech did some impressive overclocking with the low end (I believe 4200) with some amazing results.

That, or an FX-55 processor.

Fuck the Pentium processors.

Thanks for the advise man. If you don't mind, you think you could find a link to some info on those processors or somethin' I need something to go off of, or somewhere to purchase.

Unless of course, you want to buy MY AMD processor and motherboard. ;)

Athlon 64 3200+, and it's an MSI motherboard... I'll have to get back to you on the exact model, though.

the one you just got? Why are you scrappin' it already?

The intels are going to work better day to day because of hyperthreading. On the other hand, AMDs play games pretty well. If you are doing a new computer right now, you are wasting your time if you dont get either..(at the low end)

1) intel 775 3.0GHz or faster..PCI express and DDR2 :)

or

2) amd 64 3200+ socket 939 with a PCI express board

Dont even take the 754 into consideration..you are just throwing your money away on an outdated socket. Depending on what you do most of the time you are on your computer, thats a good way to make a decision about which brand to use.

Not scrappin' it; but I plan on making the jump to an X2 processor for some of the upcoming stuff I'm going to need to run and support.

Well Mister Christopher, you know the majority of the things I perform on my computer. Do you feel that I need a high end processor, or do you feel like cutting me a good deal on your items?

For future upgradability if nothing else, it's a good idea.

For the majority of the shit you do on your PC, a PIII 600 would suit you just fine. :P

The P4 630 is a 3GHz instead of the 640's 3.2, but it's over $60 cheaper and has the same 2MB cache and 800FSB. In the Pentium line up I could not find a better processor considering price. Running it at 3.6 it didn't get too much hotter, idled around 46-48*C.

I like it, it's been running a little hot lately, but it hasn't gotten below 80*F in my room in a couple weeks (I need A/C :( ). Runnning 3.0GHz it's been idling around 42*C, at night when it cools down it'll dip down to 36 or 38. Under load during the day it hasn't passed 64* yet. 3GHz is all I've found I need thus far, this computer was my upgrade from a 1.3GHz AMD laptop, in comparison this bastard is blindingly fast, so I just haven't seen the need to acutally run it faster.

But I'm a total computer n00b, so what the fuck do I know? :)

Not for one with a 90mm Zalman cooler, you won't. Especially if you plan on overclocking it, the stock cooling fan will NOT do.

This one is for a P4, so I'm sure an AMD one would be right around the same price range.
And not to mention, are you going to over clock that 3200+ to run as fast as a 3700+? Because for the same price I can just get the 3700+ an not worry about having to keep it cool for overclocking purposes.

It's already overclocked and running at a steady 42*C.

Intel > AMD in any and all experiences i've had with the two. p4 3.0c overclocked to 3.6 for well over a year now :) yet my athlon couldn't handle 100mhz even. Not to mention hyperthreading owns
