im in the process of doing my cv axles... i am having a hard time seperating the lower control arm away from the lower ball joint.

here is a pic that that i used from a thread on HT.

http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr?i=wNDIxNzg2czQxM2RmZDMxeTU0MQ%3D% 3D

i've been hammering away for 30 minutes, from the front and back... any tips or tricks? can i seperate it from the top of the suspension?

Any help is appreciated.

Hit it here and hit it as hard as you can. It takes quite a shock to break them loose.

Get a pitman arm puller. Works well, but if it's really stuck, you may mushroom the threads on the ball joint.

I've always done what Tobi said and it's worked... I won't lie though it's kind of a frusterating method. It works well tho... cuz you get pissed cuz it isn't working so you hit it harder and harder and then finally it goes.

got the driver side done... now i can't get the pass axle nut off... GOD DAMN! i hate working on cars... my gums still hurt from my surgery yesterday...

on the pass side i already broke a craftsman 1/2 drive racket... i've sprayed some PB blaster on it... and it still won't budge... I am using thebar from my 3 ton floor jack as leverage and it still won't budge... i'm almost ready to give up on it.

i got it seperated now my problem is with the passanger side axle nut....

i just gave up, too exhausted from working on it....

on a side note if i get an alignment will changing out the passanger side cv axle throw the alignment off???

Almost all ball joints have holes in the threaded part that just so happen to be a perfect fit for a pointed chisel on an air hammer. In fact that's why it's there. 2 seconds and it'll pop right out.

One time i couldn't get the bottom one out on the passenger side so I just took the top one off and unbolted some of the undercarriage... worked like a charm.

when i pull axles i dont do it like the service manual says i just unbolt the two nuts from the knuckle in the engine bay and drop down the knucle.. and the axle slides right out of the hub.. and then usually just use a pry bar to get it out of the diff/intermediate shaft.. and thats weird u see u couldnt get the lower ball joint lose.. i've never had a problem with that one.. its usually the steering rack one.. but for that i just use the ball joint seperator tool.. u can find em at any car parts store.. im pretty sure.. they work like a charm tho

it shouldnt change to much only the toe angle if any thing.... a trick with axle nuts if you dont have an impact gun is using a bar or really big screw driver and put it between two of the wheel studs and brace it so when you turn the axle nut the bar or screw driver is stuck against the ground and then just bust the axle nut loose....
