View Full Version : Two races today, suprisingly

Let me start off by saying this....I've come to the conclusion that there are essentially two types of "racers". First off you have (for the most part) people like us, who like to talk about cars, race cars, yada, yada. If we race and get beat, we generally roll up to the winner and say "Good race, whatcha got in there?". Let's face it, there is always someone faster, so there's no reason to get bitchy.
Second type of person, most people would call them "ricers". These people are typically devoid of any car knowledge whatsoever and so utterly convinced that they are the fastest thing on the road that they will lie about what they have done to their cars, talk trash about whom they've beat or talk about some unbelievable ET they got but never back it up. Ninety percent of Honda owners fall into this category (sorry to all the Honda owners all the list, but it's not aimed at you). These "individuals" honestly believe that putting "Powered by Honda" on their car makes them cool (like we couldn't tell by all the factory badges that your flipping car is a Honda). When beaten they will literally hang their head in shame, or make some lame excuse and generally shy away from even making eye contact with you.
Enter my race stories (sorry for the intro :) ).
Today I had to run up to Lone Tree from Castle Rock to do an inspection. i took my car 'cause I didn't feel like driving the gutless company F-150. So anyway I had an uneventful drive up to the Lincoln exit. There I came into contact with a younger guy driving a Maroon Subaru 2.5RS. As we were driving down Lincoln I managed to pull ahead of him. Just then my radar detector went off, so I slowed to the "appropriate" speed. This genius decided that that was unacceptable and had he been any closer to my ass would have been in the passenger seat. So as we get onto Yosemite (and the RD calmed down) we both gun it. Either he didn't know how to drive or something because it was ugly. After third I was a good 10-15 car lengths ahead and shut it down. After that I dropped down to go the posted speed limit of 35. He just kept getting farther and farther behind even at the speed limit. Pitiful.
So I do my inspection and get back on SB I-25. When I got to Surrey Ridge a silver Z28 Camero (newer model w/ ground effects) whips past me doing about 95. Not about to showed up, I give pursuit. Traffic was not cooperating so I had to wait until I was past Castle Rock to get any room. Just past the last exit of Castle Rock we both gun it. Pulled easily passed it and shut it down at about 120. Being as I passed the last exit for CR I had to go all the way down to Tomah Rd before I could turn around. For that whole distance the Camero would not get any closer to me then about a quarter of a mile. I went faster and slower to see if it would come up....nada.

Yes, these people fall into the second category :)
Sorry for the length...

C a m a r o.

Good kills. Mods...?

...BTW, there's also the kind of ricer that wants to fight and/or do damage to your car when he finds out he lacks the horsepower to beat you in a legitimate race.

hehe, I don't know how to spell them, just how to beat them ;)

As far as mods, lots of "turn tighter" stuff. Performance related;

JUN 9lb flywheel
UR Underdrive Pulley set
UR Adjustable Cam Gears
K&N FIPK
Greddy IC Pipes (upper and lower)
Apexi AVC-R (running 15psi)
Apexi S-AFC
Apexi N-1
EVO3 O2 housing (ported)
ACT 2600 W/ street disk (not really performance...)

Have a FP Green Turbo w/ 8cm2 sitting in my garage waiting on supporting mods...

Someone from Kentucky! Cool.

I used to live in Lexington. It's a nice state but the summers are too hot for me.

Good Kills, but was the Camaro actually racing? or Did he just wanna go fast? :)

If I had to venture a guess....I'd say no. A Z28 would tear that car a new one :)

no a Z28 would not tear that car a new one.....Z28's up here run in the mid 15's not too fast at all. I am not sure what thE DSM runs, but judging by the mods he wouldnt have too mcuh trouble with a z28.

I slaughter stock to mildly modded SS's so I have no doubt that he beat that guy and that he was racing.

LS1 or LT1?

well I suppose if you are capable of running 13's at Bandimere (and I don't know if you can, I'm still new here) then yes you probably could beat an LS1 Z28. Although they managed to get one to run high 12's stock once (they being Car and Driver).

I just figured at those speeds a Z28 would pull better.

Oh and in reference to your Honda comment about most of them being ricers and trash talkers...I've never met a Honda guy that wasn't cool, seems like most of the trash talkers are the DSM guys.

ugh my brain! one last thing I forgot to mention. I really dig the Conquest TSI's, sweet looking cars :) Very rarely see those around.

LS1's. The hit high 14's to low 15's up at bandimere. I beat a C5 vettee from a roll a couple weeks back too :D

Yep, best type for a Stock LS1 ('98+ Camaro/TA '97+ Vett) at bandimere is a 14.2, next fastest 14.4
Those were both drivers trying all season. Normal times are about 14.6-8 With bad drivers, low 15's

The prior years, LTS1 are lucky to get 14's stock up here.

Now the Z06 is a different story. Remember that guy who was nailing 13.7-8s once the motor was broke in. His first time at the club clash he ran in the low 14s which didn't impress me much but it's amazing what a 1000 miles will do.

The ZO6 is a beast of a car. A guy at sea level hit an 11.9 with nothing more than a set of drag radials, and a 2002 ZO6 airbox. That is damn impressive for any car.

LS1's must really suffer at altitude then...losing over a full second is awful. I really want to run my STS :) hehe

It's probably just the people we hang with. Being a member of CoDSM I really don't know too many Honda owners so must judge from the people I meet either up in Westy or on the street. It's also a subjective statement, obviously, because I can't stand rice, park bench wings, stickers (especially when the gear isn't even on your car) or hornet swarm exhaust systems. That is not to say some DSM owners aren't idiots (seen a few up in Westy as well) or trash talkers, it's just that since our cars are less common the "Hondoodilers" simply outnumber the jack-ass DSMers.

Just like how many 9 second unibody Hondas vs 9 second DSMs. Hondas are just more accessible to the racer and the younger set and the aftermarket support is huge. It also doesn't help that Mitsu made the 3rd gen non-DSMs wimpy girl cars.;)

Yep, we all lose over a full second here. It sucks but oh well..lol

Hell a few guys with the same setup as me are hitting high 12's at sea level.

Generally from my experiences in a stock DSM,they seem to only lose about 8 tenths. I ran a best of 15.72 and consistent 15.8s back in '96. The best Type R 1/4 mile I saw up here was ITR#700's time of 15.8 and Pat's best time was a 15.9. At sea level there is no way a stock DSM could beat a stock ITR,the R will win by a few tenths at least. The ITR is definetly losing over a second up here, maybe a second and two tenths.

Rule of thumb is that naturally aspirated and some supercharged vehicles lose a minimum of a second at a mile high, while more efficiently supercharged (read: centrifugal blowers aftercooled) and turbocharged vehicles will lose between .5 and .8 seconds.

...According to the NHRA, at least. What the hell do they know?

You know this is kind of funny. I'm actually in a debate over on ClubSi about altitude and the Colorado F-body website came up in the thread.

There's some guy from Chicago that claims to have ran 13.8 in a stock LT-1 at PMI, and he was calling you all slow.

well PMI sits at what...4000 feet? Almost a 2000 foot difference, but I doubt it would make that big of a difference.

At PMI a stock LT1 still would only run a high 14. They barely run in the 13s at sea level.

Not much is done to the Conquest. It has an ACT 2100, OVC pipe w/ HKS BOV, NGK plugs, Crane Wires, a real boost gauge and a MBC running 10 psi.
I was thinking about doing a 4G63 conversion to it, but it's been done so I'm going to take a different route. Love the car though, shame it doesn't have more of a following then it does. There are a few of us in CoDSM though...

Starions were the first Mitsu I actually paid attention to in the late 80s. Never thought I would have owned a Mitsu, now I own a whole bunch of other cars too. :guns: :D

Remember the black Starion in "Cannonball Run" driven by the two Japanese guys? It had the rocket propulsion system in it.

Yep, Jackie Chan was in it. Apparently he drives a custom Starion ESi-R.
