On my 86 prelude Si, do I need to drain the tranny fluid before changing the axle?
Thx

No, it'll just spill all over the place.
You might as well, when's the last time you changed the tranny fluid?

You don't have to, deopending on how full the transmission housing is some might leak out when the CV's come out. However if you can cope with a little mess, not a big deal.
But like Ryanman said, why the hell not? You're under there and it's one bolt to drain it and one bolt to fill it. That's not hard, and basic cheap gear lube is about $4/quart.

But it's more fun to pull it out and have it go everywhere. The stains on my garage floor tell a story.

Noobs. If you do the passenger side then you will have fluid come out. If you do the driver side you shouldn't have much if any fluid come out.

If you do one and then the other, yeah, the second one will spill less oil

Find your tranny fill bolt. From there to the bottom of the tranny is how much fluid you can potentially lose.

Not always I pulled some axels before and there was nothing in there.

Probably because the fluid was low, duh.

So all 3 cars I've owned were low on fluid? Ya right. ;NutKick; :)

Fluid has come out of mine every time I pulled the axle without draining it. Doesn't matter which axle it is, since they are at the same height. Of course, this is with the front end of the car jacked up and the rear on the ground, so maybe it would be less mess if the car was lifted equally all around.
