Hey guys, might seem like a dumb question but how do you remove the cam gears from the cam shafts for a 99 honda civic si.....b16a second gen. Help would be much appreciated.

There's a big bolt that holds each gear onto the cam. You'll have to break that loose and then watch out for the key that falls out when you pull the gear out.

awesome thanks for the info....however how do you hold the cam to break the bolt loose on the cam gear.

The cam should have a hole through it that goes to the head. When it's lined up properly, you can stick a screwdriver and that'll hold the whole thing still.

Oops, my bad. One of the plates that holds the cam down should have the hole. Just line the hole in the cam to that and use a screwdriver to hold it in place. There is no hole that goes through the cam.

You can also use an impact. That should break it loose without having to hold it down.

If you want to hold the camshaft itself down, many cams (I'm not sure about yours) have a square piece that you can grab with a speed wrench (crescent wrench) and hold it still.

Probably because they've never done it before.

thanks a lot guys, i got the darn things off today, i about beat the crap out of the car with a big ass hammer but some thought and time and i got them off. Believe it or not, i put 3 screw drivers in the holes you talked about STIBungy and all 3 broke off at the end. I tried peices of steel....no luck. In the end i took the whole cam out and used my dads black and decker work bench. I thought about putting it in a vice but didn't want to bend the cam gear. The work bench is made of wood and held pretty well. I finally got the bitches off, centered up the crank, replaced the seals and am waiting on the last cam seal/plug to come in at the dealership. You guys helped a lot, the si forum bites big ass, seems like they don't know too much about their cars. Thanks again....Murph

I mostly use an impact wrench on mine, it makes it easy, although I did use a socket and a screwdriver at the track last weekend when one of my cam seals popped out.

I used a screwdriver and breaker bar on mine.
