My g/f’s 98 Eclipse RS just had her serpentine belt changed a little over a year ago and today it just frayed and slipped off the pulleys. What can cause a belt to wear so fast? At the time the belt was changed her power steering pump was also replaced, a bearing was shot.
Any ideas?

Uhh, no it's not. It's a 98 Eclipse RS, AKA-420a neon motor

If it was overtightened, it will wear out faster. If the pulley is slightly warped, the belt will wear out faster starting from one side of the belt.

Cheap ass belts I noticed wear out faster. We installed some cheapo NAPA belts (not even Gates brand) at Honda Stuff a while ago and they stretched and started squeaking inside of a week and then were cracked and torn by about 10k miles. BOOO!

Well it's still a 2nd Gen, but not really considered a DSM because it doesn't have the 4G63 engine.
Only the Talon TSi, Eclipse GS-T, Eclipse GS-X and Lasers were really DSMs
The Neon, Eclipse GS, Eclipse RS, and Talon ESi all ran the 420A motor, therefor not DSM
The Evo's are primarly known as DSMs also because they house the 4G63 engine once again, it's just a new version of it.
That's why the 3000GT's (AKA GTO's) that were built at the same time are not really considered a DSM. This I might be completly wrong about, but pretty sure they were basicly built by the same crowd of people... But house the 6G72 engine.
Someone who's a true DSMer (Dark Side MuthaFucka) :D may need to correct what I have wrong here.
DSM refers to Diamond Star Motors, which was the agreement between Chrysler and Mitsubishi to build a car. So the fact that it's an Eclipse with a Neon motor makes it a DSM in my eyes.

^^^
Part of my reasoning behind calling it a DSM.
