I have a 93 TSi AWD sitting here that's just waiting for me to get off my ass and fix it, but I don't have time for it, nor do I really care any more. The current problem I believe is no more than a grenaded torque converter (yes, it's an auto), while driving on the highway there was suddenly a gridning noise and the engine started to free-rev. Pulled right over, hitched a ride, and later came back to tow it home. Hoping it could get itself on the trailor, I tried starting it, and could hear something large and heavy (like a torque converter) tumbling around in the bell housing. It finally did start, but quickly stalled out presumably as pieces of the torque converter were thrown around. So we pushed it on the trailor, parked it, and haven't fucked with it since. We started to prep it to pull the tranny, but didn't get much further than taking off the downpipe and intake pipes.
Previous to this failure, it recieved a new/used 13G turbo in BEAUTIFUL condition, new tranny fluid, new tranny filter, plugs, wires, oil and filter, and a few other odds and ends. It's black with a black leather interior, inside it's in great shape. The exterior is in good shape, it has a sizeable ding in the passenger door (golf ball maybe?) and the trim behind the windows is faded at the tops. It was in great running condition last it ran, no smoking or odd noises, no lifter tick, there were no warning signs the torque converter was about to explode. There are no holes or missing chunks in the bellhousing, no leaking ATF, it looks totally undamaged until you crank it. The only other thing that doesn't work is the hatch shocks don't hold the hatch open anymore, out of the 5 or 6 DSM's we've owned only one could hold its own hatch open, this is pretty common. It has 110K miles and otherwise is a very sound car.
I have some pictures, but the computer tey are on is currently getting a new OS installed, so I won't be able to post them until tomorrow assuming no install problems.
