I found a 1991 tsi awd for sale for $600, just needs a new starter and a basic tune-up. Has a new head and a new turbo on it. Problem is, it's in Illinois. Anybody have any experience with buying cars out of state, and how did you get them back here (i.e., drove it, shipped it, etc.) and how much did it cost? in other words, what's the cheapest most effective way to get it here? thanks.

I looked into it once. I received about a dozen different quotes from various companies who do hauling.

I was trying to get a car from Ohio and it was going to cost just under 500$ if the car was running and around 600$ if it was NOT running. Both cases were open trailer shipping. Enclosed shipping will prolly run much more.

I'd say run Google on it. If I remember correctly, there were a couple of sites that take your info, hand it to SEVERAL different shipping companies & then they get back to you with their quotes....hence why I had about a dozen come back.

I bought my car in Texas and drove it back, I spent about $100 in gas, $30 in food and coffee, and slept in a rest area with a hunting knife. Doesn't get much cheaper than that. But you really don't want to take a risk driving cross-country in a car that needs work or is even in unverified condition.
