Race season is only a few short months away, is everyone ready?
Also I would like to document the life of a race car right here. To start I will post a few pics of the very beginning. Keep checking back to see progress and hopefully winnings! see you all at the track.
step one: purchasing and prepping the car. I bought this car as many of you know as a total from my brother Ben. Ben will be a major shareholder in the teams progress since he basically gave me the car. Props to Ben. Now the car needs to be repaired and prepped for racing. Here are a few pics of the prep work I started today.

Maybe in a few weeks we can put together a Si weight loss clinic.
Basically a party where we strip the car of everything that makes it slow. And we eat barbecue and get fat.

Looks like a lot of work.

Guess it is going to be a bad time to take my car in for the top latches. You look pretty occupied with the project car.

HAHHAHAHAHHA, bring your car by if its not snowing. I dont get paid to work on race cars, I get paid to make you (my very special warranty customer friend) happy. Oh, by the way, If you get a survey in the mail asking about how your service was, there is a dinner in it if you answer "Completly Satisfied" on every question.;)

looking good. What do you plan to do engine wise for this race season?

HONDA GHANDI
01-11-2002, 04:00 PM
Keep your eyes open Monday night for more pics, I am doing the suspenson and welding then. Hopefully if everything goes well I will be putting it on the alignment rack Monday or Tuesday.
As far as performance goes this year i will be leaning towards chassis lightening and not so much engine performance. There is a slight posibility that I may NOS it for the import events jsut for a little kick. Next season i should have a new motor built. Not sure what the motor will be but I am sure it will boost hard.;)

WinglessTT
01-11-2002, 05:18 PM
Hell yeah Tobi! Good job! You might want to patent that frame straightener though.

Wish someone would give me a project car.

Does this mean that the Type R won't see anymore track time? :(

Violator
01-11-2002, 05:18 PM
I found a place that will get you a Civic Type R tranny for $1000. Although working at honda I'm sure you get a damn good discount.

HONDA GHANDI
01-11-2002, 05:28 PM
I can gear this trans a little better for about that. Plus next year when I go boost I will need a stronger lsd than the CTR has. I will probably build my own LSD out of Steve's old diff I still have.

HONDA GHANDI
01-11-2002, 11:13 PM
If anyone knows anybody selling these parts let me know used is better. Remember, its a race car, pretty isnt necesary.

1. light weight race seat preferrably 2 seats
2. racing seat belt harness (4- point)
3. aftermarket steering wheel and mount hub. (preferable aluminum)
4. manual windows, I am willing to sell the electric windows and wiring harnesses off of the project car.
5. Civic heater duct from a car with no a/c
6. carbon fiber hood

Parts for sale to help fund this project:

1. Entire 96-00 civic A/C system installed and charged by a state certified technician, $900
2. Power window upgrade for 96-00 civic coupe, price negotiable but will include the trade out of your manual window regulators and handles.
3. SRS components, air bags, and module and sensors. Wiring harness. These wont be cheap, but much less than new.$$$

more to come as the parts become available for sale. I will possibly be selling interior to right buyer, probably as a complete package.

Violator
01-12-2002, 01:07 AM
I have my power door panels with the regulators, switches, and wiring harness for my 94 civic. I'd be willing to give you my manual windows if you could put in my power windows. I'm not sure if they'll fit your Si. You would know better then me though.

I remember you saying that you had the power conversion but Im afraid it is different for the 96 -00 cars. bummer

Mr. NoSkills
01-12-2002, 09:24 AM
Hey man, I've got your seats and belts in my room right now.
2 jamex daytona's WITH rails that will fit an si. They look exactly like sparco sprints, just straight up race seats. I also have two sets of sparco 3 point belts.
The seats are yellow right now, but my friend can re-do them in another color for you cheap if you want them, the belts are blue.

Also, I'm not sure what you mean by "racecar" but I have a fiberglass hood skin that, with a tiny bit of trimming will fit around the headlights. It was for a 96-98 civic, but you could make it fit. You can have it for free. I don't need it anymore.
But it is just a skin, it weighs like a pound hehe, would use 4 hood pins.

I will let the seats + rails + belts go for $400 OR if maybe you can hook me up with some honda shit I'll be needing we can call it a deal.
shoot me an e-mail if you wanna talk about it more, esell10@hotmail.com

No worries, but if they will fit, I have no need for them after I get my power windows in.

went to Ingall's Engineering today to see the operations and meet the prez today and pick up some camber arms for the civic. I got to say those guys were really cool and they make a great product for a great price. It is a Colorado company and they always have stuff in stock. If you need any suspension parts especially camber adjusters make sure you remember the name INGALL'S. (nice plug);)

Are referring to Specialty? I thought they made Ingall's in Longmont at Specialty Automotive Products. They do make some nice stuff. They also provide a very nice sponsorship for my brother's shop and their race cars. (PFI)

HONDA GHANDI
01-22-2002, 10:27 PM
ingalls is the manufacturer. I buy directly from the factory. im sure specialty automotive buys from them too.

B16crxTurbo
01-22-2002, 11:12 PM
Specialty makes all of thier own products. They have a pretty big operation up there in Longmont. They are right off I-25, on Specialty Drive even. Where is the Ingall's factory located? I didn't they were also here in CO.

HONDA GHANDI
01-22-2002, 11:32 PM
Ingalls is n Louisville. If specialty sells ingalls they are ingalls parts. If they are labeled specialty they are probably their own.
I put a set of the ingalls front arms on today and they are a really nice peice. It looks like it can take a beating and last a long time.

okay, looks like I learn something new every day. Specialty does make and label their own parts. I didn't know we had 2 very large companies that make suspension parts here in good 'ol colorado. I actually need to buy a front upper camber kit from them, any possibility you could tell me who to get in contact with? The specialty piece is made differently and I prefer the Ingall's. Thanks

Havent thought of a name yet, project Si will do for now. Next is the other door. I will install a DX manual regulator so it can still go up and down. other than that the door will be exactly the same as the pass. side.
As far a sperformance, I think I will get a used or cheap intake and build a cold air "box' around it. I also need to install a shift light and Im always on the lookout for more weight savings.

I finished the cold air collector I have been working on today. Here are a few pics, please give me your input.
It is made of VERY thin aluminum, and has air forced from the bumper up through the bottom. I havent measured intake temps yet to see if it is working but I will.

Ok well I dont have pictures to prove this but the car passed tech today and it weighed in at 2220 lbs. There are a few more things I need to get rid of to hit my goal of 2000 lb +/- 25lbs.

Stock Exhaust manifold
sunroof and sunroof frame (45lbs!)
swaybars
cast Iron lower control arms
fuel tank and evaporative emissions controls (will need to switch to OBD-I for that one)
Would like to make a tubular front and rear suspension. But dont have the time or money to do so this year.
anybody have any bright ideas on eliminating hte sunroof and filling hte hole without it looking all ghetto? Eli?

The only thing I think you could do is have it replaced with some plexi. Maybe you could mount it from the bottom some how in a way that it would still look good from the outside? Sounds like you lost about 300+ lbs from the car!! Wow!!

I think, not sure, but think the drum brakes on the EX are lighter than the disc brakes on the SI. Wanna do a swap?! Seeing as this is a drag car (or are you track racing it too?) I don't see the need for overly impressive stopping power.

Hey Dan, whats up!, long time no see. . .

Ya, I am really impressed w/what Brent R. did for me w/the website. I really have to thank Brent L. at PFI for hooking me up with him. BTW how is everything going w/PFI-Powerhouse? So far so good. . . ? That was a really wise decision grabbing up Actions-dyno, Northern Colorado has needed one for a long time. Maybe we can do some joint promotional type things together sometime? Plus this may have been the boost that Brent L. really needed to compete for the national championship.

Dan, I might need to talk you out of some help sometime. . .Brent R. tells me you could help me set up my new software so I can print a .BMP file/logo on my graphs? Says you have already figured it out, I dont even know what a .bmp file is?

Send Brent L. my regards, I have mucho respect for him, and would still like to help his race-car any way that I can. Nice to see a local boy showing em' whats up all over the country. I want to stop by and check out your guys new shop sometime if its cool?

Yeah I could probably help you out with that when I get home, a .BMP file is an image file sort of like a .JPG. Things are going well so far as far as I know, but I have been gone for 2 months. Kinda funny how small the world really is huh? I think I was the one that actually referred PFI to you... I have know Brent R for a LONG time.

Tuesday morning MileHighLude is coming over to measure the sunroof for a plexiglass replacement. This will save us some weight. ( actually a lot of weight) sometime next week I am getting in a set of Rota subzero's and Bridgestone Potenza S0-2.
Also I should be getting a Comptech Header in. I am going ot take out the passenger seat as well. Dont really need it for the season. These tings should get me into the 15's consistantly.
Oh yeah, I ordered a Spoon steering wheel, radiator switch and T-stat this week also. For now thats about it. I will put up some pics when the stuff comes in this week.

B16crxTurbo
04-14-2002, 03:15 PM
Sweet, those wheels should save you some weight too eh? Any clue what the sunroof and mechanicals weigh? I would guess the plexi that is going to replace it will only weigh a couple pounds at most.

HONDA GHANDI
04-14-2002, 03:29 PM
I have weighed one before out of an EG hatch and it was 43 lbs.
Glass, frame, drain tubes and wiring. The wheels I have on there are about 32 lbs each, the rotas are 11 I think. hte car ws 2200 lbs yesterday so by next week i should have it down around 2050-2100. Need to get it to 2000 by the end of the year.
Then next year I can triple the HP and go superfast.

I sure miss the LSD in the ITR. I have som traction issues to iron out but overall the car ran well. fastest time tonight was a 16.060
with an embarassing 2.45 60 foot. Need to get it back on the alignmnt rack this week and redo it. I aligned it before at fullweight so Im sure it is whacked now.

Well folks, we get to start all over again today. i went to the track to get a little practice with the car before the Avs game tonight and all hell broke loose. On my very first run the left engine mount broke and sent the engine into the hood breaking the hood locks. Of course this didnt happen until I was going 88 MPH through the traps. Te hood came up, smashing hte windshield and roof. It broke the sunroof in on top of my head giving me quite a lump and headache. The worst was I had a little glass in my eye which was promptly washed out by the very quick and professional EMT staff at Bandimere Speedway. Im a little stunned but ok otherwise. without further adue: pictures.....

Well the car is back together mInus one hood. I ran Friday night ET series with it and went to the quarter finals. the car was more consistant than I have ever seen a honda in my life. It kept getting faster as the night progressed and I broke out in the fourth round by .006. Here are a few of my run stats to illustrate the point:

1st Time trial: .576 RT. 2.454 60ft 16.181 1/4 mile @ 86.75
2nd time trial: .550 RT. 2.450 60ft 16.181 1/4 mile@ 86.80
1st elim. run: .566 RT 2.449 60 ft 16.191 1/4 mile @ 83.55
(the wind picked up a little here and slowed me down at the end.)
2nd run was on the brakes hard so its no good
3rd run .534 Rt 2.443 60 ft 16.094 1/4 mile @ 87.01

Check out my first two time runs. I thought It was a mistake. The car si more consistant without the hood so I think I will keep it off.
Also it is a few pounds lighter this week. it weighs 2255 with me in it and a 3/4 tank of gas. I also went down with my tire pressures to 22 in the front and up to 40 in the rear.

Bedlam
06-09-2002, 12:19 PM
yeah it was definately right in there...seemed that you spun the tires a bit on your fastest run? Maybe just a bit different launch or something? Good runs anyway, the weather was JACKED up..it was 92F when we got there...windy as hell...THEN it got all the way down to 68F? Weird day for ET racing..

HONDA GHANDI
06-09-2002, 05:33 PM
Yeah on the brakes. It will go faster when you spin the tires off the launch but it is more inconsistant that way. I would rather be slow and winning then fast and losing.

Generic
06-09-2002, 06:44 PM
Damn Tobi, your just kicking ass aren't you. You need to ge tthat thing to hook up! I pull consistent 2.15 60's, and sneak in a 2.0 every now and then. I do have 3 times the Torque you do at 1800 RPM's though... ;)

looks good, hopefully you'll get some traction and get some mid 15's outa it..

Murdock

HONDA GHANDI
06-09-2002, 07:19 PM
Thats the problem, If I have REALLY good traction the car doesnt have enough power to pull a good 60 foot. It will run a mid 15 but its with tire spin letting me stay in VTEC through first gear. It is wildly inconsistant though. If I do a no spin, easy launch the car is right on the money just a little slow., At test and tunes I have run 15.6 several times but not all in a row. Its just one of the quirky things about hondas.

Car was very consistant and fast. (for me anyway)
I have to wait untilthe points standings come out but I think it was enough to put me from fifth to first in points.

Im starting to get used to this car and I see it becoming a very fast and good ET drag car in the future. Its so damn consistant without the hood I dont think I will run with one again.;)

Well its official, the project Si brought me some sweat, tears, blood and a class championship win in 2002. Thanks to all the support of the members of HAI who have helped in the ressurection of a bright blue doorstop to a bracket racing machine. I would also like to thank My brother for crashing the car, my wife for her unyielding support, and Chris Dye for the majority of the parts and his hard work on the project too.
Thanks to Bandimere speedway for providing the class for imports. It gives the "REAL" racers a place to shine instead of the streets. Finally the class sponsors, Cstrol GTX and Phat-n-low.
Thanks everyone and see you next year.

Im gonna have a lot of work to do to hit that. We will see. If I have ot open up the motor this year Ill build it for more boost and NOS/Alcohol injection and then 12's should be attainable. Right now Im looking for a VERY consistant 13 second car. And reliable.

how much more boost can you run with the JRSC? something like 13 lbs with a CRV pulley? but then theres the heat...ugh...s/c's suck, hehe

IF I build the block I can go to about 16 psi. Then I can put a NOS/Alcohol mix in to cool the air. IT should yield about 350-400 crank hp. Should get me well intot he 12's but Im not going tat route this year. I may just get the car to a point where its super consistant and start on my other projects. I cant afford to build all of my cars at once so I have to do them in stages.

Its been a while since I updated this thread. I thought I would revive it for all the newbies to check out. I am doing some work to it this week and thought I would share.
Bear at Dyno Pro and I are building custom front traction arms. So far I have about $125 invested in them total and they should be lighter and stronger than any aftermarket arms available.

I am also installing a MSD 6BTM timing control unit with a Blaster SS coil. This unit retards timing under boost and is fully controllable.
Along with this stuff is a new steering wheel with Fast & Furious buttons so I can stretch my 13 second runs into 30 or 50 second runs depending on if there is a train coming or not.

I installed set of Poly engine mounts and suspension bushings this winter as well as a Mr.Alex engine torque damper.

Also on the parts list is a B&M oil cooler, CM stage 4 clutch and alum flywheel. CTR LSD and GSR final drive.

I scoreda new trunk and drivers door last weekend as well as a hood last fall so I wont be AS ghetto this season as last. All of this stuff no bdoubt added weight to the car so I am working hard to find more needless items to remove for hte upcoming race season.

Hrmm..I guess I missed all the december updates...being in the hospital sucks!

You need to put the other seat back in that thing and take me for a cruise sometime..I'd love to see the reaction you get from people destroying them in a "slow" Civic. Good Stuff.

Definately cant wait to see it at the track this year tho' I was getting to a point where I was mildly consistant in my own Si..and now I get to start all over...yay! :)

Lots of luck with the project car! Any 'vette smoking civic gets my vote.

That car sure has come a long way! Is lexan still in the future? That would probably make up the loss from the added weight.

Lexan is still in the future plans but maybe not until later this season. I do have 2 seats in it now for anyone who is interested in joy rides.

On a side note, I am trying to get all the work done on it in the next week or two so I can trailer it down to Vegas for their Inagural IDRC event. It would be great to show up at Bandi this year with a few runs in the log books already.

Tobi before you get the B&M oil cooler kit take a look at perma cool stuff I am sure you get good discounts on B&M stuff but I could probably make a kit using perma cool stuff for cheaper than you would be getting the B&M kit at wholesale. They make sin on adapters for honda engines (http://www.permacool.com/Catalog/Cat_page29.html) 116 and then you have your choice of what kind of filter relocation mount you want to use. Then you can hook up a cooler in line with the filter relocation.

This is the kit I have. (http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=109784&prmenbr=361)

Looked like it was coming along nicely when I saw it yesterday..glad to see some updates here. I think its time to see what a blown Si is capable of doing in the right hands.

Looks awesome Tobi. It's hard to look at a car that is nicer than mine, totally stripped of the interior with a big sheet of diamond plating sticking out of the dash. Alex, I want a ride too, but I know that I would't be able to appreciate it as much from the trunk, or laying on my back on the floor looknig at the celling.

The only thing that would make that ride better would be some crushed velvet for the dash. No race car is complete without that final detail.

BTW..........For your past assistance you have given me, I have a hook up that will take care of you in securing this fine but very expensive fabric for your dash.

Well folks, i have not updated in a while so here we go:
Took the car to texas in April, ran a best of 13.14 @108 mph. Car broke i the semis, it made goo out of the cataletic converter guts. I didnt find this out until later though. I have a trailer for the queen now so I have been busy pulling more useless guts out of her. I got both right side door side impact beams out nad they are really heavy. Latest weight measurement was 2185 with me in it. 1990 by itself. Im getting a little shit for trailering it to the races because it is so slow still and basically street legal but eh, who cares. She is still one of the fastest, lightest JRSC stock B16s in the country if not "THE" fastest and lightest. No future plans in the works just yet, maybe some fuel system and cam timing work toget some more ponies but nothing major. Peace.

Oh yeah someof the parts are stillfor sale and the tires too.
