Spin one of the shafts, if they spin opposite ways, its an Open diff. If they spin the same way, its a limited slip.
They usually take this Q-tip like swab and stick it down in your....oh .LSD? Who knows.

The only way to tell for sure is to pop out the axles and take a peek in the hole in the tranny where the axles go in. If there is a bar going through it, you have an open diff. No bar - LSD.

No, spinning the tires will tell you the same thing.

Not so sure about that... iirc, my LSD spins opposite just like an open diff. The only ways that I can tell is to pull the axles out and look at it, or by driving it and feeling how it responds to acceleration in a turn.
if it has the lsd it wont spin the inside tire right? i have a b16, i think it would have enough power to do that

If it has an LSD, both tires should lock and turn when they slip.
If its open the inside tire will just spin and spin and the outside will be stationary in relation to the vehicle speed.
Weston that may be the case.. My BMW spun the same way, and I know it had an LSD (winter package) however my galant the rear spins opposite ways, yet I have video of both spinning.. Maybe theres different types but I have always heard that was the way to find out.

If its a viscous, it should act open except under great speed differentials (burnouts). If its helical, it should spin both, I know Miata's do

I spun both does that mean I have an LSD? HAHAHA

I know for a fact that I have a quaife, and when my front end is up and I spin one side, the opposite size spins the opposite direction. So, that does not work with all types of LSD's.

WIth a healthy VCU both wheels will spin the same direction even when cold, and it actually takes a good amount of force to spin them in opposite directions. A 'conventional' LSD will follow the same rules, be it an insert, VCU, positrac, or clutches.
Torsen diffs (Quaife) are on a whole other level, though if traction is completely lost on one wheel it will act as an open diff, which is why one wheel will spin the opposite dircetion. I don't know how exactly a helical differential differs from that, though.

helical and torsen are the same type of diff
they act like an open diff most of the time...if you spin one wheel while in the air, the other will go the opposite direction
like its already been said...easiest way is to take out an axle and look in the hole...if theres a pinion holder there, its an open diff
if not, its LSD
