15mb, jeebus! It's a little hard to see, but it looks like a real small amount, which is alright.

Great domain name, by the way.

I will retake the video now and see if I can't make it brighter.

Thanks.

Here is the new and improved video, and I compressed it as well.

It seems to be alot, but if it doesn't have any oil in it,(which it look like no) its probably not bad.

Once again, shutup. OBVIOUSLY there is no damn oil in it because it has not been in the car with NO FUCKING OIL PRESSURE.

That is alot of shaft play, I'd be getting my money back.

That's defiantely a bit, for a rebuilt unit I would expect less.

But on the bright side you're getting more shaftplay than I am :)

Is it a Garret? I have seen 2 brand new 50 trim garrets with that much play in them from PTE. That is my reasoning for so much shaft play. BTW, shaftplay isn't the turbo killer, lack of balance is.

That's cause it's a PTE, it's to be expected.

It does seem like a bit much. I'm not sure if TEC has a dial to check it... they'd prolly want like a hundred bucks to check it too.

Who is PTE?

And BTW, it has no in/out shaftplay, only side-to-side.

Oooh ok. BTW, here is the site the turbo came from -- all it says is Garett on the damn thing, and the compressor side has AirResearch faded on it.

I'm going to pick up a new dial indicator in the next few days, if you want to swing by my place we can measure it. I don't have specs for anything Garrett, however, but I'm sure they are lurking around on the internet somewhere.

Sure why not!!! If you want just send me a PM when you get it, or I'll just keep in touch with you. :)

I usually get about 6-7 inches of vertical shaft play.

I'm sorry Stu.

Anyways, it seems like the general consensus is that the in/out play is the important part, which the turbo has and that all oil lubricated turbos will have some shaft play.

My setup isn't planned to be done for another 2 months or so, so I'll wait for Doc to get his dial and check it to make sure it's within spec.

My PTE 50 trim has a lot of side to side shaft play. I checked it after running the car, when it was hot and it had 0 play.
PTE already told me I could send it in and they would check it, but its been fine now for 1k miles.

No smoking or anything so far. :crosses fingers:

I've seen brand new MHI turbos with enough shaft play to make me worry a litte, though a little bit of oil pressure does wonders for tightening it up. All turbos have some degre of play just from the clearance in the bearings/bushings. Since the tip of the shaft is a few inches from the bearings the lateral movement there can be rather significant. Typically as long as the wheels don't hit the housings, it still spins freely when you push it all the way to the side and it isn't blowing oil (unknown in your case) it's porbably perfectly within spec. However it's more than worth checking if you have doubts before running it, and since it doesn't cost you anything why the hell not? :)
