I was at my local car alarm install shop and saw a car tracking system that would tell you where your car was if it was stolen. It cost $600 for the system and $50/year for the service. I like the system, but don't want to pay $600 for it, although $50/year would be fine. I'm thinking this is one of the new cell phones that know their location coupled with a Web app that superimposes the location information over a map. Does anybody make a cheaper version of this?

Talk to Dwane, I know his company does this kind of stuff regarding car tracking. I'm just not sure if it's in the car alarm space, nor the entry/service price. Dwane's name on here is "TheCleaner"

and http://www.streettrak.com/
and from what i understand, it's a gps+cell unit mounted in your car. like i mentioned in that thread, there are units for $300-400. i never tried any of those, but i guess you get what you pay for ;)
