View Full Version : Head Bolts for boost... ARP vs AEBS?

Looks like it's time for a new head gasket, and I plan to install new head bolts at the same time. It looks like the big two brands are ARP and AEBS... does anyone have any thoughts or experiences with either of them?

ARP bolts work well for me, running >20PSI of boost.

Never heard of AEBS, ARP's are the only thing I use along with millions of other people.

if i had to choose it would be the ARP. I know Pang is using stock head bolts with 20+ psi of boost with no problems tho.

All I can say is do your research. I have used many brands over the 7+ years and none have failed me. Some cost more than others. I have come to find that those that imporve on ones design must be good to go with. But not everyone is that good! The golden eagles just cost me a lot less than ARP or AEBS. I like them. There bead blasted and GE says there better and seems to stand behind that! Till Im proven wrong with a fucked engine, Im rockin the GE head bolts!

I use ARP.

ARP has been proven for many many years on cars making much more power than your honda. Why would you go with something different?

I used ARP for 30+ psi in the supra.

AEBS are most likely made by ARP.

Go stock or go home! I've ran nothing but stock head bolts on all my Turbo'd Honda's over the years.
Wait, just kidding. I'd go for ARP since they are indeed proven time and time again.
But as long as the head is off, it's a good idea.

Thanks for the info. I was leaning towards ARP already, but now it's not even a question. My head gasket is currently only slightly blown and combustion chamber air gets into the coolant... it only seems to show the symptoms after I boost at high RPMs for a prolonged period (ie driving to work and the 1/4 mile don't do it). It's a minor annoyance, if any, when beating on it on the street, but it can be quite a problem on the road course. I'm hoping that better clamping head bolts will help prevent this problem from developing again with the new head gasket...

Are you using a MLS head gasket? That pretty well describes what happened to me recently, but I had three bent exhaust valves too that were found by the machine shop when I took the head to be checked for warpage.

I'm just using a stock B18B head gasket with 86k miles on it... 20k of them with boost.

Definitely consider a MLS head gasket. I use the Cometic, as does everyone else I know that is running boost.

I have Cometic MLS gaskets with ARP 220k Undercut studs. My stock head gasket is MLS, and is very well proven for high power applications (as are the bolts), though it won't accomodate my 080 overbore. The only experience I have with either of those components is engine v4.0 found an untimely demise when the Cometic gaskets didn't crush because my head bolts were fucked up. So I said fuck it and got ARP's, and while I was at it I got ARP main studs as well. ARP seems to be regarded as the best, and not having experience with any others I decided to go with them.
