So my dad and I ran the car around the block until it was overheating and we found the fan does not work at all. We checked the fuse which looks good. The relay clicks when given voltage, and when given power directly to the fan from the battery, the fan fires up. We know what the fan sound is, and it definitely is not coming on at all when driving.
Maybe it could be the engine management unit? Is there any kind of test you can do to see if it is in fact a crapped out ECU? Could it have anything to do with the greddy E-manage?
We were also thinking maybe it is the temp. sensor in the ECU that is sending shitty information, causing the idle to go up/down/up/down/up/down.
Either way, maybe a new ecu would be in order, or could you fix the one I have?

so the fan isn't getting any power through the harness?

Sounds like its the thermostat, the car shouldn't be overheating when you are driving around.

he only drove it around the block, not on a highway. it could overheat.
but i agree, it does sound like a thermostat.

The fan is not controlled by the ECU. It is a simple switch and relay system. Take the two pin plug off the thermostat housing and jump it with a paperclip. If the key is on the fan should come on. If it does not there is a problem with the wiring somewhere. If it does come on there are two possibilities, the fan switch is dead, or the fan switch is never getting hot enough due to a sticking thermostat.

We replaced the coolant temp. sensor next to the distributor, but where is this thermostat housing you are talking about?

It would be just below the throttle body. Its a small round flange with the lower hose from the radiator connected to it. There is a brown or black plug conected to the back of it. That is the fan switch.
