Hi Tobi,

I'm still getting that unusual idle that I was telling you about, and the temp. gauge is still going out of whack. It went all the way up last night, so I popped the hood and there was no steaming. The engine didn't appear to be that hot either. We were thinking that maybe replacing the temp. sensor in the coolant would help with the problem. Could you tell me where the sensor is located so that we can do some simple tests on it to make sure it has not crapped out?

It should be by the thermostat housing which is below the distributor and to near the back of the block.

Are you sure that it's not the thermostat that is stuck shut?

That sensor is the radiator fan switch... the sensor that controls the temp gauge is on the head. An overheating engine wont always steam, so it is possible that the engine is overheating. It could be that the radiator fan isn't kicking on when it should, the thermostat isn't opening enough, or the temp sensor in the head is bad.

I would guess that the t-stat is going bad at this point. I had the car running for 2 hours and it never broke a sweat. You can check the sensor but they hardly ever go bad. Its the one under the distributor with one wire on it.
