...you know, cheap ebay-type ones, are they actually any good? anybody used them? i'm kinda curious cause it costs like $20 and it also has small fonts saying "show or off-road use only". so is that just an empty pipe that looks like cat converter? and i can forget about passing emissions with this?

this is freaking hillarious: one of the descriptions for cat converter on ebay says:
10-15 HP increase (more with turbo/supercharger)
yeah, no shit, with turbo added our supa-dupa cat converter will give you more horsepower

Those aren't catalytic convertors, they are nothing more than a straight piece of pipe that you put in place of a cat. Some people call them a "test pipe". Either way, they are not a high flow catalytic convertor.

that's what I thought...
Weston, do you run a cat? or one of these things?
basically, i guess my question is - can you run a stock cat with boosted engine?

you can run a stock cat with a boosted engine, but you will see quite a performance increase with a 'Test pipe' when you compare the two.

To pass emissions, I swapped out my test pipe and added a real Magnaflow 2.5" High Flow cat. The performance at 13psi felt like I was at 7psi with the cat installed.
As soon as it gets a little warm out again, back in goes the test pipe.

I run a 2.5" CarSound high flow cat... passes emissions and makes good numbers on the dyno.

I use a Carsound too, it was only about $60 for a 2.5" unit with a mid-bed O2 bung, just like the factory cat.
