View Full Version : intercooler piping vs. CAI piping

i'm thinking of re-using CAI pipes as part of intercooler setup. is it worth even considering? cai pipes are designed for regular atmospheric pressure, so i guess clamps and fittings will have to be replaced, that's for sure. otherwise, cai pipes seem to be wider than regular 2.5" intercooler piping. can that be a problem?
any ideas/advices?

Same stuff, I know a bunch of people who ghetto-rigged their charge pipes using cheap Ebay CAI pipes.
Worked fine for all of them

I would have a bead rolled on the end to keep the pipes from blowing off... but silicon adapters and T-bolts should have you covered. :)

The extra size of the CAI piping adds a lot of volume that you don't really want to charge every time you boost. Steel exhaust J-bends are cheap and they are easy to build charge piping out of. Get a size that is the same ID or slightly larger that the ID of your compressor outlet.Score the ends and either t-bolt or double clamp them with good SS hose clamps to deal with the pressure. I painted mine with black header paint and they look about stock under the hood.
Here's some from Jegs:

ah, there you go, thanks Roger for clarifying the extra size issue.
I'm probably getting a universal intercooler piping kit which should take care of the pipe that goes to intake manifold, but I hoped i wouldn't have to redo at least part of the piping. And I'll remember your black paint idea, although I think i'll be too lazy to do it right now. maybe later. I like the idea, it adds up to a sleeper style, but it's additional work ;)
Mario, on my CAI pipes i have beads, so i think with appropriate t-clamps i would have been fine.
Alex, anyway, looks like i won't be reusing cai piping - so much for economic solutions ;)
