I'm switching to dish next week and I'm planning on getting the DVR tuner. I've also been looking at Tivo too. In the long run is sounds cheaper because of the $299 lifetime subscription. I havn't used either so I don't know if one sucks or if one has better features. If anyone has used either one or both of these I'd be interested in hearing the pros and cons.

TIA

I've had a dvr for the last 2 years or so, and I dont really have any complaints, except for when we had it with dish you couldnt watch one channel and record another. With comcast we can though. Other than that I dont see anything bad about it. I've never used Tivo though.

It depends on what kind of receiver you get. If you get the 501, 508, 510 you can only watch what you are recording. If you get a 522, 721, 921 the receiver has 2 tuners so you can record one channel and watch another.

I never really had experience with TIVO so I don't know anything about it. DVR suits my needs.

with the new dual-tuner dvrs you can either connect 2 TVs to one receiver or record a show while watching another one or use picture in picture.

I really don't think there is much difference. I have Tivo and have had it for the last 2 years. Tivo is a brand name, it is part of their problem, Tivo is just a DVR. They are the same except where your cable company may have their logos the Tivo one would show (as far as I know).

Its like Jello, Kleenex, Rollerblades, whatever. Tivo isn't doing so well businesswise and it is probably because they haven't set themselves apart yet everyone uses the name Tivo when they talk about recording TV when half of them probably don't have an actual Tivo.

Tivo has become an action, not a brand.

haha, I'm bored

TiVo is pretty nice. I've had a 1st generation unit since they came out about 5 years ago. Still going strong and they've added many nice features over the years. The newer models have a ton of storage, two tuners, and apparently have some sort of networking option. I can hack mine to add an ethernet card or more storage though.

I'd say go with Tivo, but that is only because I know you can hack them and do some sweet upgrades (like a bigger hard drive). There is plenty of stuff on the web on this topic.

I had a 1st gen that I hacked and put 2x60GB drives in, now I have a DirecTV RCA Tivo that records two channels. I have no complaints about Tivo, it is the best thing ever to happen to TV.
